Chapter 1 - The Microphone Drop

The silence that fell over the university quad was absolute. It was the kind of quiet that precedes a hurricane. I held the microphone with a steady hand, looking down at my father, whose face had drained of all its furious color, leaving him a pale, terrified white.
“You see,” I projected my voice, making sure every syllable echoed off the brick buildings, “my parents told everyone I dropped out of school. What they didn’t mention was that I earned a full-ride scholarship. Because I didn't need their money, they decided to take mine.”
My mother lunged toward the stage steps, her eyes wide with panic. “Lily, stop this right now! You’re having a mental breakdown!”
“I’m perfectly sane, Mom,” I replied smoothly. I pulled the documents from the envelope. “In this folder are the bank statements and forged federal loan applications. For the last four years, my parents have been taking out massive student loans in my name, forging my signature, and funneling the cash into Julian’s bank account to fund his cars, his apartment, and his lifestyle after he flunked out.”
The crowd erupted into furious whispers. Julian, the so-called golden boy, suddenly looked like a trapped animal. He took a step backward, trying to blend into the crowd, but people actually stepped away from him, leaving him isolated on the grass.

“Security!” the dean barked into his headset, looking at the documents I handed him. “Call the local authorities. Now.”
My father tried to run. He actually spun on his heel and sprinted toward the parking lot, leaving his wife and son behind. But two campus police officers tackled him before he made it past the fountain.
