Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I felt a profound sense of absolute relief wash over my tired body.

The nightmare was finally over, and my family had survived the impossible.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the tiny microchip, and dropped it into the Director's waiting hand.

“Thank you, sir,” I said, my voice shaking with adrenaline.

I turned to watch the medics load my father onto a stretcher to take him to the hospital.

Wesley and Margaret were sitting in the back of an FBI transport van, their wealthy empire completely destroyed.

I hugged June, kissing her soft forehead, promising her she would never face this kind of danger again.

Director Vance inspected the microchip closely, turning it over in his fingers.

He slipped it into his expensive suit pocket and nodded approvingly.

“Excellent work, Nora,” the Director whispered.

Then he pulled a suppressed pistol from his waistband and shot my father's two medics squarely in the chest.

Before I could even process the horror, the Director aimed his weapon directly at my father's head.

He pulled the trigger, and my father's body went completely limp on the stretcher.

I screamed, reaching for my weapon, but four FBI agents instantly grabbed my arms and pinned me to the floor.

Director Vance calmly adjusted his tie and signaled to the transport van outside.

The agents unlocked Margaret and Wesley's handcuffs, letting them step freely out of the vehicle.

Margaret walked slowly back into the foyer, a triumphant, wicked smile spreading across her face.

She knelt down beside me, forcefully ripped my crying baby from my desperate arms, and gently rocked her.

“I told you she needed to learn her place,” Margaret whispered to the baby.

Director Vance looked down at me as the agents aimed their rifles at my head.

“Take the Captain to the black site,” Vance ordered coldly.

“And make sure she never sees the sun again.”
