Chapter 1 - The Mandatory Meeting

Wesley drove in complete silence.

The winding roads of Myers Park usually felt welcoming, but today they felt like a trap.

I sat in the passenger seat, holding June tightly against my chest.

My phone had remained completely silent since my father sent a single confirmation message.

Wesley’s hands gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned entirely white.

He finally cleared his throat as we approached the massive iron gates of his family estate.

“Nora, you have to understand how my mother operates,” he pleaded.

I did not look at him.

“She operates on the assumption that everyone around her is weak,” I replied.

Wesley swallowed hard and parked behind a line of unfamiliar black SUVs.

The driveway was no longer filled with luxury sports cars from the welcome party.

Instead, military-grade vehicles with tinted windows completely surrounded the property.

We walked through the heavy oak front doors into the grand foyer.

The crystal chandelier still sparkled, but the atmosphere was suffocating.

Richard Pembroke, Wesley’s father, paced frantically across the marble floor.

Margaret sat on a velvet sofa, looking highly annoyed but entirely unbothered by the tension.

“This is absolutely ridiculous,” Margaret scoffed as we entered.

She pointed a manicured finger at me.

“Your father is overreacting to a harmless little joke.”

Before I could speak, the heavy library doors swung open.

My father, Colonel Thomas Ellis, stepped into the room in his full dress uniform.

He did not come alone.

Four armed military police officers stood perfectly still behind him.

Margaret rolled her eyes and stood up.

“You have no jurisdiction here, Colonel,” she sneered.

My father did not even look at her.

He kept his cold, calculated gaze fixed entirely on Richard Pembroke.

Richard was trembling so violently that he had to lean against a mahogany table.

“Thomas, please,” Richard begged, his voice cracking.

“I had no idea she was going to do that to Nora.”

Margaret looked at her husband in pure confusion.

“Richard, why are you apologizing to this man?” she demanded.

My father finally turned his attention to the woman who had humiliated my daughter.

“Because your husband knows exactly who signs his company's federal defense contracts,” my father said quietly.

Margaret's face went completely pale.

“He also knows what happens when I cancel them,” my father added.

Richard dropped to his knees right there on the marble floor.

He confessed that if my father pulled the contracts, the Pembroke family would be utterly bankrupt by tomorrow morning.

Margaret gasped and stumbled backward.

But the shock on her face quickly transformed into a wicked, desperate smile.

She reached into her designer purse and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents.

“You can take our money,” Margaret whispered.

“But a family court judge just signed this emergency order granting me full custody of my granddaughter.”
