Chapter 2 - The Ransacked House

I stared at the dashboard screen in absolute horror.

Someone had remotely hacked my vehicle's computer system to trap me in the parking lot.

I grabbed my purse, pushed the car door open, and ran toward the busy main street.

I hailed a passing taxi and ordered the driver to take me straight to my mother's house.

If Ryan was desperate enough to trap me, he was desperate enough to search her property.

When the taxi pulled up to the familiar suburban home, my stomach instantly dropped.

The heavy oak front door was standing wide open, its frame splintered from a forced entry.

I paid the driver and crept slowly up the front steps with my phone gripped tightly in my hand.

The interior of the house was completely destroyed.

Every drawer was pulled out, cushions were slashed open, and paintings were ripped from the walls.

They had been searching for the financial documents my mother kept hidden.

I heard the sound of glass breaking in the master bedroom down the hall.

I held my breath and peered around the corner of the hallway.

Ashley was standing in the middle of the room, using a hammer to smash my mother's antique vanity.

She did not look like a grieving mistress or an expecting mother.

Her eyes were cold, calculated, and filled with violent frustration.

"I know you are standing there, Claire," Ashley said without even turning around.

I froze as she slowly turned to face me with a wicked smile.

"Ryan is an idiot, but I am the one you should actually be terrified of," she whispered.

She pulled a sharp hunting knife from her designer purse and stepped toward me.
