Chapter 1 - The Postscript

Ryan crossed the aisle and lunged for the letter.
I stepped back just in time to avoid his grasping hands.
The funeral director moved smoothly to block my husband's path.
"Sir, you need to step back immediately," the director warned with a low and steady voice.
Ryan’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson as the remaining guests whispered around us.
Ashley stood paralyzed near the front pew with her hands still resting on her flat stomach.
"Give me that letter, Claire," Ryan demanded while completely ignoring the director.
"You have absolutely no right to read her private words right now."
I folded the cream-colored paper and slid it deep into my coat pocket.
"She addressed it to me, Ryan, not you."
I turned on my heel and walked down the center aisle to leave the heavy scent of lilies behind me.
My heart hammered against my ribs, but my steps remained perfectly steady.
I pushed through the heavy wooden doors of the chapel and stepped into the cool afternoon air.
I needed to get to my car before Ryan could follow me outside.
My hands shook violently as I unlocked my sedan and slipped into the driver's seat.
I pulled the letter back out to read the final lines my mother had written.
She had included a hidden postscript on the very back of the page.
"Ryan does not love Ashley, and he certainly does not care about that unborn baby."
"He owes a massive debt to a dangerous syndicate, and your inheritance is his only way to pay them off."
Before I could even process those terrifying words, the engine of my car suddenly died.
