Chapter 8 - The Unlikely Savior

The deafening blast knocked Dr. Evans completely off his feet.
Thick gray smoke poured aggressively into the sterile concrete room.
A figure rushed through the ruined doorway, holding a heavy assault rifle.
I squeezed my eyes shut, fully expecting my father's security team to finish the job.
Instead, strong hands quickly began slicing through my thick leather restraints.
I opened my eyes and looked directly into the bloodied, bruised face of my husband.
"Glen?" I choked out in absolute disbelief.
He didn't say a word, simply pulling me roughly to my feet.
Dr. Evans groaned on the floor, attempting to reach blindly for his dropped scalpel.
Glen kicked the doctor violently in the ribs, sending him sliding across the bloody tiles.
"Where is the nursery?" Glen yelled, pointing his rifle directly at the doctor's head.
Dr. Evans coughed up a thick spray of blood and pointed a shaking finger down the hall.
Glen grabbed my hand tightly and dragged me out into the dark, smoky corridor.
"Why are you helping me?" I asked, stumbling over fallen debris as we ran.
"Because I might be a coward, Maya, but I am not a monster," Glen replied breathlessly.
We reached a heavy white door with a small viewing window at the end of the hall.
I looked through the glass and saw Ariel sleeping peacefully inside a secure crib.
Glen used the butt of his rifle to smash the electronic lock completely into pieces.
I rushed inside and scooped my sleeping daughter securely into my shaking arms.
"We need to move right now," Glen urged, constantly checking the hallway behind us.
"Richard's men tracked my phone, and they are sweeping the building from the roof down."
We sprinted toward the red glow of an emergency exit sign at the far end of the corridor.
We burst out into the freezing night air, finding ourselves in an abandoned industrial park.
A sleek black car was idling perfectly next to a crumbling brick wall.
Glen opened the back door and pushed me inside with Ariel.
"Drive!" Glen shouted to the unseen driver in the front seat.
May you like
The driver turned around slowly, illuminated completely by the dim streetlights.
It was Clara.
