Chapter 5 - The Flight For Survival

I didn't waste a single second watching the two men brutally fight on the patio.

I gripped Ariel securely in my arms and sprinted barefoot across the wet grass.

I bypassed the locked wooden gates and ran straight for the open sliding glass door of the living room.

Behind me, I heard a sickening thud, followed by a loud, agonizing groan.

I refused to look back to see who had won the struggle.

I burst into the kitchen, my wet feet slipping wildly on the polished marble floor.

I grabbed my car keys from the kitchen island, my fingers shaking uncontrollably.

I ran toward the attached garage, slamming the heavy fire door shut behind me.

I locked the deadbolt just as someone began pounding violently on the other side.

"Open this door right now, Maya!" my father's voice boomed through the solid wood.

I strapped Ariel quickly into her car seat, ignoring her frightened tears.

I jumped into the driver's seat of my SUV and slammed the push-to-start button.

The engine roared to life just as the wooden door leading to the kitchen splintered open.

My father stepped into the garage, his face covered in fresh blood, raising the gun.

I threw the car into reverse and slammed my foot heavily onto the gas pedal.

The SUV smashed completely through the closed aluminum garage door with a horrific crash.

Metal screamed and glass shattered violently across the driveway.

I didn't stop to check the damage as I shifted into drive and sped down the suburban street.

I glanced in my rearview mirror, watching my beautiful house disappear into the distance.

I needed to find a police station immediately to report the insane hostage situation.

I reached for my phone in the center console, but remembered I had left it by the pool.

Ariel was crying softly in the back seat, terrified by the loud noises and breaking glass.

"Mommy's got you, baby, everything is going to be fine," I lied through my teeth.

Suddenly, a massive black truck sped out from a side street and violently T-boned my car.
