Chapter 3 - The Silent Architect

The mechanic looked absolutely terrified as I slid into the booth across from him.
My contact, an older man named Vance, casually sipped his black coffee.
Vance explained that he had used his private investigators to track the mechanic down after I called him.
I stared at the man who had cut Rebecca’s brake lines for a paycheck.
I wanted to drag him across the table and end his life right there in the diner.
But Vance placed a firm hand on my wrist, reminding me that dead men make terrible witnesses.
The mechanic confessed everything through a stream of pathetic tears.
He admitted Blake had paid him fifty thousand dollars to guarantee the car would crash on the steep canyon road.
I recorded every single word of his confession on my phone.
I now had the weapon I needed to send my brother to prison forever.
But prison was far too good for a man who shoved my daughter into a cake and killed her mother.
I wanted Blake to feel the exact same powerlessness he had forced upon me my entire life.
I wanted him to lose his money, his reputation, and the father who had worshipped him.
Vance looked at the encrypted ledger I brought and smiled a dangerous, predatory smile.
He told me the Sterling family company was built on a fragile house of cards.
If I played my hand correctly, I could legally absorb their entire empire without them ever knowing my name.
For the next five years, I lived a brutal double life.
By day, I continued to wear my stained work shirts and drive my battered HVAC van around the city.
By night, I used the stolen funds Blake had hidden in the offshore accounts to build my own shadow corporation.
I named my company Castle Holdings in honor of the birthday cake my daughter never got to eat.
Through Vance’s brilliant manipulation of the stock market, Castle Holdings quietly bought up all of my father’s massive corporate debts.
Every time Blake made a foolish investment, I was the unseen ghost buying the collateral.
June grew into a brilliant, beautiful fifteen-year-old girl who never lacked for anything.
She thought my late nights on the computer were just me studying for advanced engineering licenses.
She had absolutely no idea her father was now a silent billionaire pulling the strings of the city's economy.
On a rainy Tuesday, Vance called me with the news I had been waiting half a decade for.
The Sterling family company was officially on the verge of total bankruptcy.
Blake was desperately trying to schedule an emergency boardroom meeting to beg a mystery creditor for a bailout.
I smiled as I looked at my reflection in the window.
I was that mystery creditor.
My phone beeped with a sudden, urgent text message from Vance.

He told me to turn on the local news immediately because something had gone terribly wrong.
Blake had just gone on live television to announce that Castle Holdings was a fraudulent scam.
