Chapter 3 - The Ghost Ledger

I dropped the glass of water.
It shattered violently against the hardwood floor, sending sharp shards flying everywhere.
My face was officially plastered on every single news station in the state.
I was suddenly the prime suspect in a two-billion-dollar money laundering scheme.
"He deliberately framed me," I gasped, struggling to pull any air into my burning lungs.
Dante stepped carefully over the broken glass and guided me to a plush leather sofa.
"He transferred the illicit funds into hidden offshore accounts registered in your maiden name."
Dante pulled a thick, heavy manila folder from the glass coffee table.
"Your signature is clearly stamped on every single legal document."
I shook my head frantically, refusing to believe the nightmare I was living.
"I never signed anything for his business."
Dante opened the folder and handed me a thick stack of printed papers.
I stared in absolute horror at the dark blue ink.
It was a perfect, flawless forgery of my specific handwriting.
"The only way to prove your innocence is to find your father's original ledger," Dante explained patiently.
"My father was a legitimate real estate developer," I argued defensively, fiercely protecting his memory.
Dante looked at me with a complex mixture of profound pity and deep regret.
"Your father was Roman's chief accountant."
The walls of the luxurious penthouse felt like they were rapidly closing in on me.
My entire life had been meticulously constructed on a foundation of massive, unforgivable lies.
"Where is this ledger right now?" I asked, my voice finally hardening into something like courage.
Dante pulled up a digital, glowing blueprint on his sleek tablet.
"It is locked inside a hidden wall safe in your childhood home."
The old Moretti estate had been boarded up and abandoned since my father's funeral.
"We are going to break in tonight," Dante stated with absolute authority.
He handed me a sleek, black tactical jacket to keep me warm.
We arrived at the crumbling estate under the heavy cover of a freezing rainstorm.
Dante bypassed the rusted iron security gates with surprising, silent ease.
We crept quietly through the dark, dust-covered hallways of my youth.
We finally reached my father's old, familiar study at the end of the corridor.
Dante pushed the heavy oak door open with his shoulder.
I froze completely in my tracks.

The large oil painting that hid the wall safe was already torn down.
Standing perfectly still in the center of the room was Vanessa Lane, desperately clutching a silver hard drive.
