Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Roman stood incredibly confidently in the doorway, completely flanked by heavily armed, corrupt federal agents.

He had clearly bought the entire department with his endless blood money.

"You always were incredibly stubborn, my sweet, predictable Evelyn," Roman mocked smoothly, adjusting his expensive tie.

Dante fiercely raised his weapon, but four red laser sights instantly painted his broad chest.

I completely refused to let Roman win this easily.

I aggressively grabbed a heavy, metal fire extinguisher from the wall bracket.

I smashed it violently and repeatedly into the master server's delicate cooling unit.

Bright sparks showered wildly across the room as the system immediately initiated a catastrophic, irreversible hardware wipe.

"No!" Roman screamed furiously, losing his composed, polished facade entirely as he lunged forward.

The giant screen turned completely black, permanently freezing all two billion dollars in an inaccessible digital void.

Roman's criminal empire was instantly, completely, and irrevocably bankrupt.

The corrupted security system automatically triggered a mass email containing the evidence to every news outlet in the country.

The corrupt federal agents nervously looked at their phones, realizing Roman could absolutely no longer pay them their bribes.

They immediately lowered their weapons, turned on their former boss, and aggressively placed Roman under arrest.

Dante securely grabbed my hand and we slipped out completely unnoticed in the chaotic confusion.

We successfully escaped to Dante's private, heavily guarded island safe house in the Caribbean exactly three days later.

We joyfully celebrated our massive, impossible victory with incredibly expensive champagne on the warm, moonlit beach.

Dante held me incredibly close in the dark, and I finally felt completely safe in his strong arms.

I woke up the next morning to the peaceful sound of crashing waves, but the massive bed was completely empty.

I walked slowly into the kitchen and found a cheap burner phone resting heavily on the counter next to a single red rose.

I happily pressed play on the blinking voicemail, fully expecting a sweet, romantic message from Dante, but instead, Roman's chilling laughter echoed through the quiet room.

"Thank you for unlocking the impenetrable funds for us, Evelyn," Roman's voice purred wickedly from the speaker, "My secret brother Dante played his romantic part perfectly, and we are both incredibly grateful for your naive cooperation."
