Chapter 8 - The USB Drive

Arthur slammed on the brakes and pulled into the parking lot of a brightly lit, 24-hour truck stop diner.
Chloe's seizure had stopped, but she was entirely unresponsive and terribly pale.
I needed to know exactly what was on that drive to guarantee the FBI would believe me.
We ran inside the diner, where a solitary trucker was typing on a laptop in a corner booth.
I slammed a hundred-dollar bill on his table and begged him to let me plug the drive into his computer.
He agreed, and seconds later, a series of encrypted medical files flooded the glowing screen.
The documents proved Julian had sold Chloe to an underground medical syndicate for ten million dollars.
There were transfer receipts, offshore bank accounts, and emails directly linking the local sheriff to the cartel.
"Lady, you need to get this to the feds right now," the trucker whispered in horror.
Before I could safely eject the drive, an error message flashed across the monitor.
The USB drive possessed an automatic GPS tracking beacon that activated the moment it connected to the internet.

Flashing blue and red lights suddenly flooded the diner windows from every direction.
Julian kicked the front door open, holding a matte-black assault rifle.
