Chapter 3 - The Ditch

The impact sent the SUV careening across the icy asphalt.
I gripped the steering wheel, desperately trying to regain control of the sliding vehicle.
The black truck accelerated, ramming us a second time with devastating force.
We crashed through the wooden guardrail and plunged down a steep, snow-covered embankment.
The airbags deployed with a deafening pop, filling the cabin with white smoke.
I unbuckled my seatbelt, my head throbbing, and immediately reached out for Chloe.
She was conscious but terrified, crying softly as I pulled her out of the shattered window.
We had to hide before whoever was driving that truck came down to finish the job.
I carried her deep into the dense, frozen woods lining the edge of the highway.
We crouched behind a massive fallen oak tree, burying ourselves in the thick snow to stay hidden.
Footsteps crunched heavily on the ice above us near the wreckage.
Through the branches, I saw Julian holding a high-powered flashlight alongside a tall stranger.
"Find them, we need that girl back before morning," the stranger ordered in a deep, raspy voice.
Julian nodded respectfully and addressed the man standing beside him.

"Yes, Sheriff, I will check the tree line," Julian replied.
My blood ran completely cold as I realized the local police were involved in this nightmare.
