Chapter 2 - The Cold Driveway

Victoria's eyes were utterly devoid of emotion as she stepped closer.

"She was supposed to sleep, Evelyn," my daughter-in-law hissed.

She lunged forward, aiming the sharp needle directly at my neck.

Adrenaline surged through my veins, giving me strength I did not know I possessed.

I shoved Chloe behind me and grabbed a heavy metal snow shovel resting against the garage wall.

I swung it blindly, striking Victoria hard across the wrist.

She shrieked in pain, dropping the syringe into the thick snow.

Without wasting a second, I reached into her coat pocket and snatched the keys to her SUV.

"Get in the car, Chloe," I yelled, unlocking the heavy doors.

I threw the vehicle into reverse, tires spinning wildly on the ice before finally catching traction.

Victoria screamed at the top of her lungs as I sped out of the driveway.

I merged onto the desolate highway, constantly checking the rearview mirror in pure terror.

Chloe was shivering uncontrollably in the passenger seat, her breathing growing incredibly shallow.

"Hang on, baby, we are going to the hospital," I told her, pressing the gas pedal to the floor.

The digital dashboard clock read midnight, and the roads were completely empty.

I thought we had finally made a clean getaway into the safety of the night.

Then, a pair of blinding headlights suddenly flashed directly behind me.

A massive black pickup truck slammed violently into our rear bumper.
