Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

The luxury sedan sped through the rainy streets of the city, the silence inside suffocating.
Eleanor clutched Leo tightly to her chest, her mind struggling to process the ultimate betrayal.
“How much did he pay you, Marcus?” she asked, her voice hollow with disbelief.
Marcus kept his eyes fixed firmly on the slick road, his knuckles white on the steering wheel.
“It wasn't about money, Eleanor, it was about a full partnership in the new global conglomerate,” the lawyer replied coldly.
Richard let out a dark, raspy chuckle from the passenger seat, his pistol never wavering from Eleanor’s direction.
“You always were too trusting, darling, it was your fatal flaw,” Richard mocked.
They drove for nearly two hours, leaving the bright city lights far behind them.
They entered the dense, ancient woods that surrounded the Blackwood Estate.
The heavy iron gates swung open as Marcus flashed his headlights, revealing heavily armed guards patrolling the perimeter with vicious attack dogs.
The car stopped in front of a sprawling, sterile-looking concrete building hidden behind the main mansion.
Richard forced them out of the car at gunpoint, shoving Eleanor forward in the freezing rain.
They were marched down a long, bleak corridor that smelled heavily of bleach and old despair.
A guard unlocked a heavy steel door, and Richard violently shoved Eleanor and Leo inside.
“Make yourselves comfortable, it’s going to be a very long rest for both of you,” Richard sneered before slamming the door.
The heavy deadbolt echoed with a terrifying finality.
Eleanor searched the dim, windowless room, finding only two thin mattresses on the cold concrete floor.
It was exactly the white room Leo had described.
She sank to the floor, wrapping her arms around the shivering boy, feeling utter hopelessness wash over her.
As her eyes adjusted to the terrible lighting, she noticed something strange near the baseboard in the corner.
There were tiny, jagged scratch marks etched deep into the concrete wall.
She crawled over to the corner, running her fingers over the frantic, desperate writing.
It was Sarah’s messy, unmistakable handwriting, carved with what looked like a stolen spoon.
Eleanor read the hidden message aloud, her breath catching in her throat.
“He isn't keeping me alive to torture me, and he isn't after the company anymore.”
Leo pointed to the final sentence scratched near the floor.
“He is after the royal inheritance trust, and Leo is the true heir.”
Eleanor stared at the words, a sickening, impossible realization creeping into her mind.
She looked at Leo’s emerald eyes, eyes that were exactly like her sister’s, but also exactly like her own grandmother’s.
She remembered being six months pregnant on the night of the terrible car crash.
She remembered waking up in the hospital, weeping as Richard told her the baby had not survived the impact.
Before she could process the earth-shattering truth, the facility’s emergency sirens suddenly began screaming.
Red alarm lights flashed through the small crack under the heavy steel door.
Someone had violently breached the security perimeter of the building.

The heavy deadbolt on their door suddenly clicked open, and the door swung wide.
Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain and holding a massive shotgun, was Dr. Vance.
