Chapter 8 - The Housekeeper's Secret

Rosa stood like an unstoppable warrior in the middle of the ruined library.
The gentle woman who used to bake me cookies was holding a military-grade weapon with absolute precision.
"Rosa, who are you?" I asked while staring at her in pure amazement.
"I have been your grandmother's personal bodyguard for three decades," Rosa answered without looking away from Brittany.
Brittany raised her hands in the air and backed away toward the heavy oak doors.
"Please do not shoot me," Brittany begged while sobbing pathetic, fake tears.
Rosa kicked the dropped revolver far across the room to ensure it was completely out of reach.
"Unlock the front doors and let the authorities inside," Rosa instructed me firmly.
I ran to the library doors, turned the heavy brass key, and threw them wide open.
A dozen armed police officers flooded into the room with their weapons drawn.
David Callahan ran in behind them, looking incredibly relieved to see me standing there alive.
The officers quickly secured my unconscious father and placed heavy steel handcuffs on Brittany.
They read them their rights and dragged them out toward the waiting patrol cars.
I handed the fragile documents from the Black Box directly to the lead detective.
"These papers prove massive corporate fraud, extortion, and premeditated murder," I explained carefully.
The detective reviewed the pages and nodded his head in serious agreement.
"This is more than enough evidence to freeze all of Richard's assets permanently," he assured me.
I felt a massive wave of relief wash over my exhausted body.
The five million dollar check was never just a simple holiday gift from Grandma.
It was the golden key designed to completely unlock a five hundred million dollar stolen empire.
The detective placed the documents into a secure evidence bag and sealed it tightly.
"We will present this to the supreme court judge first thing tomorrow morning," the detective promised.
Rosa lowered her shotgun and looked at me with a deeply troubled expression.

"We have a terrible problem, Claire," Rosa warned me in a low voice.
"The supreme court judge reviewing this case is Judge Vance, and he has been on Richard's secret payroll for twenty years."
