Chapter 4 - The Ex-Husband's Deal

I stared at Derek with a mixture of absolute hatred and terrifying realization.

My father had intentionally brought my ex-husband into this mess just to break me.

Derek walked over to my father and handed him the signed medical documents.

"Your grandmother will be transferred to a highly secure facility where she cannot make any more financial mistakes," Derek said proudly.

"You are a corrupt monster," I whispered while glaring at him.

Derek stepped incredibly close to my face and lowered his voice so only I could hear.

"I can make this entire medical evaluation disappear right now, Claire," he offered quietly.

"What do you want?" I asked through gritted teeth.

"Transfer that five million dollars into my personal account, and your grandmother goes free."

He was trying to extort the exact money that was meant to save my life.

I reached into my pocket and subtly pressed the record button on my smartphone.

"You want me to pay you five million dollars for a fake medical diagnosis?" I asked loudly to ensure the microphone caught it.

Derek chuckled arrogantly and nodded his head.

"Consider it an overdue divorce settlement, my sweet Claire."

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and smiled directly into his eyes.

"I think the state medical board will be very interested in hearing this recorded conversation, Derek."

Derek's arrogant smile vanished instantly as he realized he had fallen into my trap.

My father roared in anger and lunged toward me to snatch the phone from my hands.

Before my father could reach me, Grandma suddenly stood up from her wheelchair.

Everyone in the room froze in complete shock because she had not walked unassisted in five years.

She grabbed my hand firmly and pulled me close to her face.

"Find the Black Box hidden in the library before he does," Grandma whispered urgently into my ear.

Suddenly, the lights in the entire mansion flickered and went completely dark.

Someone had intentionally cut the main power lines to the estate.
