Chapter 2 - The Enemy Inside

Arthur stared blindly at the name printed on the routing document, his mind spinning as he realized the man who drafted his will was actively trying to rob his son.
Marcus had been his closest confidant and legal advisor for over a decade, attending every family birthday and celebrating every major corporate victory by Arthur's side.
"You really thought you could pull this off without me noticing?" Arthur growled, waving the damning piece of paper directly in Elena's rapidly paling face.
Elena quickly recovered from her momentary shock, a wicked and highly confident smirk slowly creeping across her lips as she realized the secret was finally out.
"Oh, Arthur, you always were a brilliant businessman but a completely oblivious husband," she mocked, casually walking over to the crystal decanter to pour herself a generous glass of bourbon.
Maria cautiously stepped backward toward the grand staircase, intuitively keeping her body positioned firmly between the unpredictable woman and the softly crying child.
"I am calling the police right this second to have you arrested for massive financial fraud and attempted embezzlement," Arthur declared, reaching into his tailored suit jacket for his smartphone.
Elena took a slow, deliberate sip of her drink before laughing out loud, a harsh and grating sound that sent fresh shivers down Maria's spine.
"Who exactly do you think pays the local police commissioner's massive gambling debts, my sweet, naive husband?" Elena asked rhetorically, raising her glass in a mocking toast.
Arthur froze with his phone halfway to his ear, slowly realizing that Marcus’s vast political connections could easily make this entire pile of evidence disappear in an instant.
"You are going to pack a single bag and walk out of that front door right now, or I swear I will ruin you," Arthur threatened, though his voice lacked its previous absolute certainty.
Elena dramatically rolled her eyes and set her crystal glass down on the expensive wooden table with a sharp, echoing clink.
"If I walk out that door, Marcus will execute a contingency clause in your company's holding structure that instantly liquidates all of your domestic assets," she explained with chilling precision.
Maria gasped softly, her grip tightening on little Leo's shoulders as she realized the true, horrifying scale of the financial trap these monsters had meticulously set for her employer.
"You have absolutely no right to destroy this innocent boy's life just because you are a greedy, heartless monster!" Maria shouted, unable to contain her boiling maternal rage any longer.
Elena turned her cold, dead eyes toward the trembling nanny, her entire demeanor shifting from mocking amusement to pure, unadulterated malice.
"You should have kept your pathetic little mouth shut and simply collected your minimum wage paycheck, Maria," Elena hissed, taking a menacing step toward the terrified employee.
Arthur immediately stepped aggressively into Elena's path, using his towering height to force the treacherous woman to back away from his trusted staff member.
"Don't you ever dare speak to her like that again, because she is ten times the woman you will ever be," Arthur firmly stated, standing his ground like an immovable stone wall.
Elena simply smiled a hollow, shark-like smile and slowly pulled a small, sleek black remote control from the deep pocket of her designer silk skirt.
"I tried to do this the quiet, legally complicated way, Arthur, but you just had to play the noble hero," she whispered, her thumb hovering dangerously over a glowing red button.
Before Arthur could even step forward to snatch the strange device from her hand, Elena pressed the button with a look of absolute triumph.
Every single light in the massive mansion instantly shattered into sparks, plunging the entire estate into suffocating, pitch-black darkness.

A cold, mechanical voice echoed from the central security system's backup speakers, chilling Arthur to his very core.
"Warning, perimeter defenses disabled, multiple hostile breaches detected in the east wing," the automated voice announced perfectly calmly into the terrifying darkness.
