Chapter 6 - The Virus

The server room was bathed in an eerie, pulsing red light from the backup battery towers. The massive cooling fans were dead, and the room felt like an oven. In the center of the room sat the main terminal, its screen glowing with lines of malicious green code.
Chloe rushed to the terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "It’s a localized worm," she said, her voice tight with panic. "It’s completely overwritten the safety parameters. The drill is spinning at three times its maximum rated RPM. It’s grinding straight into the methane shelf."
"How long until we hit the pocket?" Finn asked, moving to the physical hardware racks, looking for the manual disconnects.
"Ten minutes," Chloe said. "If the drill hits the methane pocket at this speed, the friction will ignite it. The resulting explosion will vaporize this entire rig and trigger a localized tsunami that will wipe out the coastline."
"Can you kill the code?"
"They encrypted it with a rolling cipher. It would take me hours to crack it." Chloe slammed her fist on the desk. "Sterling thought of everything."
Finn looked at the massive bundles of fiber-optic cables feeding into the servers. "If we can't kill the code digitally, we kill it physically. We sever the connection between the mainframe and the drill motors."
"You can't just unplug it!" Chloe argued. "The drill has automated fail-safes. If it senses a sudden loss of telemetry, the emergency brakes will engage. At this speed, the kinetic energy will sheer the drill shaft in half. The heavy pipe will drop straight down and puncture the methane pocket anyway!"
Finn ran his hands through his hair, his mind racing. He was a mechanic. He understood machines, friction, and pressure.
"We don't cut the power to the drill," Finn said slowly, a dangerous idea forming in his head. "We introduce a controlled failure. We flood the drilling shaft’s housing with the ocean."
Chloe stared at him like he was insane. "You want to intentionally breach the hull?"
"If we blow the intake valves on the lower deck, millions of gallons of seawater will rush into the drill housing. The sudden influx of cold water and immense physical pressure will choke the drill motor, forcing it to stall out naturally without triggering the fail-safes. It's like flooding an engine block."
"The water pressure will rip the lower decks apart!" Chloe yelled.
"That's why we have to get the crew out of the mess hall first," Finn said, grabbing his bag. "We have eight minutes. I'll go to the lower decks and manually blow the intake valves. You go to the mess hall, get the crew, and get them to the lifeboats."

"Finn, you'll drown!"
"I survived your father's fish tank, didn't I?" Finn offered a grim smile. "Go!"
