Chapter 1 - The Undertow

And there was Finn.
He wasn’t supposed to be in the atrium. Finn was a tertiary systems engineer, a man whose existence Julian Blackwood barely acknowledged unless a filtration pump failed. Dressed in oil-stained canvas pants and a heavy utility shirt, Finn was a stark contrast to the polished obsidian and brushed slate of the Blackwood Citadel. But right now, he was the only thing standing between Chloe and the ravenous maw of the Abyssal Vault.
The water didn’t just flow; it attacked. It was a freezing, crushing force, carrying with it the terrifying inhabitants of the deep. A ghost shark, disoriented and thrashing, slammed onto the flooded marble floor, its dead eyes reflecting the emergency strobe lights.
Finn didn't hesitate. While Julian stood paralyzed on the sweeping staircase, his mind unable to process the destruction of his flawless hierarchy, Finn plunged into the freezing brine. The water was waist-deep and rising violently, the current threatening to sweep him off his feet. He waded toward Chloe, the debris of Julian's priceless sunken lounge acting like underwater shrapnel.
"Chloe!" Finn roared over the deafening klaxons and the roar of the rushing water.
She couldn't hear him. Her head slipped under the churning surface as the fabric of her emerald silk dress snagged tighter against the shattered brass railing. Finn dove. The water was paralyzingly cold, shocking the air from his lungs. He opened his eyes, the salt burning them, and saw her struggling, the dark, jagged opening of the breached acrylic tank acting like a vacuum, pulling the water back in a terrifying undertow.
Finn grabbed the railing, his muscles screaming against the current, and pulled himself toward her. He wrapped one arm around Chloe's waist and used his other hand to rip a heavy, titanium multi-tool from his belt. With a desperate, blind slash, he cut through the thick silk snaring her to the brass.
The moment she was free, the undertow grabbed them both. Finn kicked off the railing, holding Chloe tight against his chest, fighting the current with every ounce of strength he possessed. He dragged them toward the staircase, gasping for air as they broke the surface.
Julian was finally moving, rushing down the steps to grab his daughter's hand, hauling them both onto the dry marble. Chloe collapsed, coughing up seawater, her whole body shivering violently. Finn collapsed beside her, his chest heaving, his eyes locked on the ruined tank.
"My vault," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of horror and absolute fury. "Look what you've done."

Finn looked up, wiping the freezing water from his eyes. "What I've done? Mr. Blackwood, I warned you three days ago that the hydrostatic stabilizers were showing micro-fractures. You told me I was easily spooked."
Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of cold, calculating rage. "You are a mechanic, Finn. Not an engineer. And this... this was no accident. This was sabotage."
