Chapter 2 - THE INTRUDERS

The next morning, I didn't go to work at the nursing home. I couldn't. I sat on my cheap sofa, staring at the ledger. It was filled with offshore routing numbers, bribes paid to city officials, and the exact details of the hit on Eleanor’s son. It was a death warrant for Victor Sterling.
At 10:00 AM, my cell phone rang. It was my manager at the facility.
“Leo, where are you?” she hissed, sounding terrified. “There are three men in custom suits here. They’re tearing apart Eleanor’s room. They’re asking for you.”
Ice flooded my veins. “Tell them you don't know where I am. Call the police.”
I hung up. Victor hadn't stopped looking for her. He had tracked her down just days too late.
I grabbed the satchel, shoved the ledger and the key inside, and bolted for the door. Just as I reached the hallway of my apartment building, the elevator doors chimed. Two massive men in dark trench coats stepped out, their eyes locking onto me.
“Leo?” one of them asked, reaching inside his coat.

I didn't wait to answer. I sprinted down the emergency stairwell, taking the concrete steps three at a time. I heard heavy boots crashing down the stairs behind me. I burst out the fire exit into the alleyway, hopped the chain-link fence, and lost them in the crowded morning streets of downtown.
I was officially being hunted.
