Chapter 10 - THE LEGACY

One year later.

The trial was swift. With Eleanor’s video, the meticulous ledger, and the financial trails, Victor was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in a federal penitentiary. The corrupt empire he had built was entirely dismantled.

As the legal spouse, the courts awarded me full control of the Sterling trust—a net worth of over three billion dollars.

I didn't buy yachts. I didn't buy mansions.

I walked up the steps of the small, underfunded nursing home where I had once worked for minimum wage. I had purchased the entire facility, along with the three city blocks surrounding it.

Construction crews were already breaking ground. We were turning it into the Eleanor Sterling Sanctuary—a state-of-the-art, luxury care facility for the elderly who had no family, completely free of charge.

I walked into Eleanor’s old room. It had been preserved perfectly.

I set the worn leather satchel down on her old bed. I traced the faded leather with my fingers, smiling softly.

They had thought she was just a lonely, forgotten woman waiting to die. They had thought I was just a desperate, invisible orderly.

We proved them all wrong.

“We did it, Gloria,” I whispered to the empty room, using the name she had first given me. “You can rest now.”

I picked up the satchel, walked out of the room, and stepped into the bright, beautiful future she had trusted me to build.
