Chapter 4 - The Ghost Journalist

Marcus was waiting in the shadows of a decaying warehouse. He was in his late fifties, wearing a trench coat, his face weathered by years of chasing stories that people didn't want told. He was a disgraced investigative journalist; Arthur had saved him from a corrupt libel suit a decade ago.

We sat in the back of his rusty van, the glow of his laptop illuminating our faces. I handed him the encrypted drive.

“Arthur was a genius,” Marcus muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard. “He didn't just collect evidence. He built a digital dead-man’s switch. But he needed a biometric verification to activate the final sequence to send this to the feds.”

“Biometric?” I asked.

“He needed your fingerprint, Clara. Or rather, the DNA sequence from the Sterling bloodline to unlock the master ledger. That’s why he had to marry you. Spousal privilege protected the physical handoff, but he also needed you alive to bypass the final firewall.”

Marcus opened a sub-folder labeled The Auction.

“Look at this,” he pointed to the screen. “The clinic didn’t shut down. They just moved operations underground. And tomorrow night, they are hosting an 'adoption gala' at a private estate in the Hamptons. It’s an auction, Clara. Wealthy elites bidding on stolen infants. Chief Vance is the head of security for the event.”

I looked at the photos of innocent babies attached to the files. I thought of my mother, growing up in awful foster homes, feeling unloved, all because someone wanted a payday.

“We have to stop it,” I said, my voice hardening. “We have to blow it wide open.”

“If we try to leak this now, Vance will use his connections to scrub the internet and have us assassinated before the sun comes up,” Marcus warned. “We need a direct line to the FBI Director, and we need to catch them in the act. The only way to trigger the dead-man's switch and validate the evidence is from the internal server inside the estate.”

“Then I’m going in,” I said.
