Chapter 10 - Justice

I opened my eyes. Vance was on his knees, clutching his shoulder, blood pouring through his tuxedo jacket. Standing in the doorway was an FBI tactical team, their rifles smoking. They swarmed the room, tackling Vance to the floor and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

A female agent approached me, lowering her weapon. “Clara Sterling?”

“Yes,” I breathed, my knees finally buckling.

“We got the files,” she said gently, helping me up. “We have units hitting three different clinics across the country as we speak. We have the buyers, the doctors, the politicians. We have everything.”

As they dragged Vance away, he looked back at me, his face twisted in defeat. The untouchable Chief of Police was finally broken.

Epilogue - Six Months Later

I stood by the twin headstones in the quiet cemetery under a warm autumn sun. The grass was green, and the air was peaceful.

Arthur Sterling - A Father Who Never Stopped Looking. Evelyn Sterling - Beloved Daughter and Mother.

The scandal had ripped the country apart. Over four hundred arrests were made. The human trafficking ring that had stolen my mother, and countless others, was completely dismantled. Vance was sitting in federal prison awaiting a trial that would undoubtedly end in consecutive life sentences.

I had been fully exonerated. The murder charges were dropped the moment the FBI raided Vance's office and found the matching morphine vials in his personal safe.

I reached down and placed a single white rose on Arthur's grave, and another on my mother's.

I wasn't a fugitive anymore. I wasn't just a hospice nurse. I was Clara Sterling, the woman who finished the war her grandfather started. I picked up the worn leather briefcase, its rusted latches finally shining in the sunlight, and walked away. For the first time in my life, I wasn't alone. I had a legacy.
