Chapter 2 - The Silver Key

I ditched my damaged car three miles away in the parking lot of a dying strip mall. I wiped down the steering wheel, grabbed Arthur’s heavy leather briefcase, and pulled my medical scrubs over my face like a makeshift hood. I had to take two different city buses and walk a mile in the pouring rain to reach the address taped to the silver key.

It was a rusted, brutalist concrete building on the industrial edge of the city: Secure-Safe Storage.

The silver key slid perfectly into Unit 404. I hauled the rolling metal door upward, the screech echoing in the damp corridor. Inside, a single overhead bulb flickered to life, illuminating a fortress of cardboard boxes and filing cabinets. Arthur hadn't just been searching for his daughter; he had been building a war room.

I opened the first cabinet. It was organized by year, dating back forty years. There were hundreds of folders. I pulled one out at random.

BABY: MALE. BORN: 10/12/1988. LISTED STATUS: STILLBORN. ACTUAL STATUS: SOLD FOR $250,000 TO THE VANDERBILT ESTATE.

Bile rose in my throat. They were treating human beings like inventory.

I found the file on my mother. Subject 42. It detailed everything. The doctor who forged her death certificate. The nurse who drugged my grandmother so she wouldn't remember the birth. And a series of wire transfers approved by a young beat cop who had been paid handsomely to look the other way when the clinic was investigated.

That cop was now Chief of Police, Elias Vance.

At the very back of the unit, sitting on a wooden desk, was a burner phone and a black encrypted flash drive. A sticky note in Arthur’s shaky handwriting read: Clara, if you are reading this, they know who you are. Trust no one with a badge. Call Marcus.
