Chapter 3 - The Flames of Betrayal

I grabbed Marisol and Renata and threw us violently onto the hard concrete floor.

The explosive device detonated with a deafening roar that shook the entire bus terminal.

A massive wave of heat and shattered metal flew just inches over our heads.

The smoke alarms immediately began to blare as terrified travelers ran screaming into the streets.

I pulled Marisol and Renata to their feet through the thick and choking black smoke.

We sprinted out the back exit of the terminal and disappeared into the chaotic city night.

We found shelter in an abandoned warehouse near the industrial shipping docks.

The freezing wind howled through the broken windows as we sat shivering in the dark.

Marisol cried quietly while holding Renata tightly against her chest.

She realized that Sterling had anticipated her every move and destroyed the only evidence we had.

I felt a crushing weight of despair settling heavily onto my exhausted shoulders.

I had built a billion-dollar empire, but I could not even buy a warm blanket for this child.

Renata suddenly reached into the deep pocket of her oversized green raincoat.

She pulled out my dark-brown leather wallet and handed it back to me.

I gently told her that I had already checked the wallet and all my credit cards were useless.

Renata shook her head and pointed to a tiny tear in the inner leather lining.

She said she had felt something hard hidden deep inside the fabric while she was waiting in the rain.

I carefully used my pocket knife to slice the expensive leather completely open.

A tiny black encrypted flash drive fell out into the palm of my hand.

I had absolutely no memory of ever placing a flash drive inside my personal wallet.

I realized this was the exact same pocket where I kept the photograph of my estranged daughter.

Julia had vanished three years ago after a massive argument about the future of my company.

I borrowed Marisol’s cheap prepaid smartphone and used an adapter to read the hidden files.

The screen illuminated with a video recording of Julia looking terrified and exhausted.

She looked directly into the camera and said she had uncovered a massive criminal syndicate operating inside Vanguard.

She revealed that Sterling had not just stolen money, but he was actively funding dangerous offshore cartels.

Julia said she hid the drive in my wallet before she fled because it was the only place Sterling would never look.

She begged me to find her at a specific set of geographic coordinates hidden in the video code.

I felt tears streaming down my face as I heard my daughter's voice for the first time in three years.

Before the video could finish playing, a massive spotlight flooded the abandoned warehouse.

A military-grade helicopter hovered right outside the broken windows with snipers aiming laser sights directly at our chests.

Sterling’s voice echoed through a powerful megaphone from the chopper above.

He announced that we had exactly ten seconds to surrender the flash drive or die.
