Chapter 1 - The Name on the Paper

Marisol poured the cheap coffee into two chipped ceramic mugs.

She handed one to me with a steady and calloused hand.

I took a careful sip and waited for her to continue her heartbreaking story.

She explained that she had worked as a regional supervisor for eight long years.

She had proudly managed over fifty commercial cleaning crews across the entire state of Texas.

She was abruptly fired three months ago without any warning or severance pay.

I asked her what she had done to deserve such a sudden and brutal termination.

She looked down at her worn shoes and took a very deep breath.

She said she had noticed massive financial discrepancies in the corporate payroll accounts.

Ghost employees were being paid thousands of dollars every week for maintenance shifts that did not exist.

She reported it to her immediate director because she expected a thorough internal investigation.

Instead of investigating the fraud, human resources called her into a windowless office the very next morning.

They falsely accused her of stealing expensive cleaning supplies and terminated her on the spot.

They aggressively threatened to have her arrested if she ever contacted the local authorities.

The blatant injustice of her story made my blood boil with intense anger.

I asked her the name of the company that had treated her with such cruelty.

Marisol looked me dead in the eye with a profound sense of exhaustion.

She said the company was called Vanguard Facilities Management.

The warm coffee mug almost slipped completely out of my trembling hands.

Vanguard Facilities Management was the largest subsidiary in my entire corporate portfolio.

I personally owned the massive company that had wrongfully destroyed this innocent woman's life.

I realized with a sickening feeling that I was the one who blindly signed the quarterly termination reports.

My own signature was on the official document that pushed Marisol and Renata into absolute poverty.

I opened my mouth to apologize for my catastrophic negligence.

Before I could speak, a sudden and violent pounding echoed through the small apartment.

Someone was kicking the front door with terrifying and aggressive force.

The flimsy metal deadbolt began to splinter against the cheap wooden doorframe.

Marisol grabbed Renata and quickly pulled her behind the narrow kitchen counter.

The front door crashed open and hit the interior wall with a deafening thud.

Three large men in dark tactical suits stepped into the room holding suppressed pistols.

The lead gunman pointed his weapon directly at my chest and smiled coldly.

May you like

He told me I really should have stayed in my secure penthouse tonight.

He slowly raised his weapon and placed his finger on the trigger.
