Chapter 9 - The Arrests

The burning mansion illuminated the dark forest in a terrifying, brilliant orange glow.
Dozens of heavily armored police cruisers and federal tactical vehicles swarmed the property.
Officers quickly surrounded Julian, pulling his unconscious body from the mud and snapping heavy steel handcuffs on his wrists.
Paramedics rushed toward us with thermal blankets and emergency medical kits.
I sat on the bumper of an ambulance, finally allowing myself to breathe a genuine sigh of relief.
A federal agent approached me and gently took my phone to secure the livestream evidence.
"You did an incredible job tonight, ma'am, your ex-husband is going to federal prison for life," the agent promised.
I looked down at my baby, who was miraculously sleeping peacefully through the entire chaotic ordeal.
Sterling walked over to us, his expensive coat covered in mud and ash from the explosion.
He knelt down in front of me and gently brushed a stray lock of hair from my sweaty forehead.
"I swear on my life that I will never let anyone hurt either of you ever again," Sterling vowed softly.
I looked into his striking silver eyes and saw absolutely nothing but pure, unadulterated sincerity.
For the first time in nearly a year, I finally felt completely safe and truly protected.
Doctor Evans was found safely recovering in a nearby hospital, having been rescued by the initial police response team.
The nightmare that Julian and Eleanor had meticulously orchestrated was completely dismantled.
Julian was formally charged with kidnapping, extortion, domestic terrorism, and massive corporate fraud.
He would spend the rest of his miserable life locked in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.
Sterling offered to take us to his private, highly secure penthouse in the center of the city.
I accepted his offer, completely exhausted but filled with a beautiful, overwhelming sense of hope for the future.

As we flew back in his helicopter, I watched the sunrise paint the city skyline in gorgeous shades of gold and pink.
My son opened his silver eyes and looked up at the man who was truly meant to be his father.
