Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Michael froze completely as he felt the cold steel of the pistol press against his spine.

“Sarah, what are you doing?” Michael whispered, his voice cracking in sheer panic.

Sarah kept the gun perfectly steady, refusing to look at her husband.

“I am surviving, Michael,” Sarah answered coldly.

She looked directly at Viktor, completely ignoring my presence in the room.

“I had absolutely nothing to do with the fraudulent five-million-dollar loan,” Sarah lied smoothly.

“Michael forged my father's signature, and Michael squandered the money on crypto.”

“I am willing to trade his worthless life in exchange for my total freedom.”

The absolute lack of humanity in my daughter's voice chilled me to the bone.

She was fully prepared to murder her own husband to save her luxurious lifestyle.

Michael fell to his knees on the dirty warehouse floor, sobbing uncontrollably.

“How can you do this to me?” Michael begged, looking up at the woman he loved.

Sarah laughed, a harsh and bitter sound that echoed through the empty metal building.

“You think I actually loved a pathetic loser who couldn't even pay for his own groceries?” she sneered.

“I have been secretly draining the remaining cash from your hidden accounts for the last three months.”

“I was planning to run away to Europe with a real man anyway.”

Viktor crossed his massive arms over his chest, clearly entertained by the domestic betrayal.

“And who exactly is this real man you plan to run away with?” Viktor asked with a mocking grin.

Suddenly, a slow, sarcastic clap echoed from the dark catwalk high above us.

Everyone looked up as a tall, sharply dressed man stepped out of the shadows and leaned against the railing.

He had slicked-back dark hair and a confident, incredibly arrogant smile.

My heart instantly stopped beating in my chest.

It was Marcus, my former accounting protégé and business partner.

The same Marcus who was supposedly killed in a fiery car crash three years ago after embezzling from our firm.

“Hello, Arthur,” Marcus called down from the catwalk, his voice dripping with pure venom.

“You look like you've seen a ghost.”

Marcus descended the metal staircase slowly, flanked by three heavily armed mercenaries.

He walked over to Sarah and wrapped his arm affectionately around her waist.

Sarah lowered her pistol and smiled up at him with absolute adoration.

“You orchestrated this entire nightmare?” I asked, struggling to comprehend the massive deception.

“Of course I did, Arthur,” Marcus boasted proudly.

“I faked my death to avoid the federal prison sentence you tried to hand me.”

“I spent three years hiding in the shadows, manipulating your greedy, pathetic daughter into destroying your life.”

Marcus pulled a sleek digital tablet from his jacket and held it up for me to see.

“But stealing your suburban house was just a minor distraction,” Marcus revealed.

“I want the ten million dollars you hid in your offshore private trust.”

I shook my head, keeping my expression entirely blank.

“You can't touch that money, Marcus,” I stated firmly.

“The accounts are heavily encrypted and guarded by international banking laws.”

Marcus laughed loudly, tapping the screen of his tablet with a vicious grin.

“I already hacked past the international firewalls, old man,” Marcus sneered.

“The only thing standing between me and your ten million dollars is a biometric security lock.”

Marcus gestured to his heavily armed mercenaries.

The men rushed forward, grabbed me by the arms, and forced me aggressively to my knees.

Marcus pulled a small, high-tech retinal scanner from his pocket and pressed it violently against my face.

“You are going to open that account right now, Arthur, or I will let Viktor burn you alive,” Marcus threatened.
