Chapter 5 - The Ghost Accountant

The silence in the penthouse was completely deafening.
Viktor Petrov stared at me, the silver handgun still gripped tightly in his massive fist.
“You are the Ghost?” Viktor whispered, his voice losing its threatening edge.
“My father searched for you for a decade just to thank you.”
I nodded slowly, keeping my hands resting casually on the arms of my chair.
“I prefer to remain untraceable, Viktor.”
“But right now, your financial empire is bleeding out through incredibly sloppy money laundering.”
“Your lieutenants are leaving digital footprints that the FBI will easily track within seventy-two hours.”
Viktor slowly lowered his weapon and tucked it securely into his shoulder holster.
He gestured for his heavily armed men to lower their rifles and step back into the hallway.
“You can fix this massive federal tax problem?” Viktor asked respectfully.
“I can make the entire seventy million dollars completely vanish into legitimate shell companies,” I confirmed.
“But my specialized services come with a very specific price.”
Viktor sat down on the leather sofa opposite me, completely ignoring David, who was still trembling on the floor.
“Name your price, Mr. Sterling,” Viktor commanded.
“I want the five-million-dollar debt Michael owes you officially transferred into my name,” I stated.
“I want to hold the exclusive legal right to collect that debt in any manner I choose.”
Viktor chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound that echoed through the luxurious room.
“Your son-in-law is a pathetic, sniveling rat,” Viktor said with absolute disgust.
“He is entirely yours to destroy, on the condition that you clean my financial records tonight.”
I spent the next six hours sitting at my encrypted laptop, navigating the dark web and international banking protocols.
I systematically erased the digital trail leading to Viktor’s illegal empire.
I funneled his dirty money through legitimate real estate holdings and untraceable foreign trusts.
By sunset, the federal audit flags against the Petrov syndicate were completely eliminated.
Viktor watched the screen with immense satisfaction.
“You are a true master of your craft, Arthur,” Viktor praised, offering me his hand.
I shook his hand firmly, sealing the dangerous alliance.
“Now,” Viktor said, pulling a custom platinum phone from his jacket pocket.
“How exactly do you want to handle the rat who stole your house?”
“Call Michael,” I instructed coldly.
“Tell him you have found a private investor willing to buy his debt, but he must meet you in person immediately.”
Viktor smiled fiercely and dialed Michael’s number.
The phone rang twice before Michael answered, his voice shaking with absolute terror.
Viktor ordered Michael to bring Sarah to an abandoned shipping warehouse by the docks in exactly one hour.
Viktor hung up the phone and looked at me with a predatory grin.
“They will be there,” Viktor promised.
I put on my heavy winter coat and followed Viktor and his armed guards down to the garage.
We drove in a convoy of black SUVs toward the desolate, freezing waterfront.
When we arrived at the massive, empty warehouse, Michael’s cheap sedan was already parked outside.
I stood silently in the deep shadows of the warehouse, watching Viktor walk into the center of the dim lighting.
Michael and Sarah were standing together, shivering and terrified.
“We don't have the money yet!” Michael cried desperately.
“Just give me one more week to sell the house!”
Viktor shook his head in mock sympathy.
“You don't own that house, Michael, because you forged the signature,” Viktor revealed smoothly.
Michael’s face drained of all color as he realized his massive fraud was entirely exposed.
“But the good news is, a generous investor has purchased your entire debt,” Viktor announced.
Sarah let out a massive sigh of relief, clearly thinking they had miraculously survived.
“Who bought the debt?” Sarah asked eagerly.
I took a slow, deliberate step out of the dark shadows and walked into the harsh overhead light.

“Hello, Sarah,” I said, looking directly into my daughter's horrified eyes.
Before Michael could even react, Sarah suddenly pulled a small silver pistol from her purse and pointed it directly at Michael’s back.
