Chapter 5 - The Heir Apparent

Rough hands dragged me out of the truck and threw me onto the cold asphalt.

Another man reached into the back seat and unbuckled Brucie.

"Don't touch my baby!" I screamed, kicking and thrashing against my captors.

A sharp prick in my neck sent a wave of icy numbness through my veins.

The world faded to black before I could even see their faces.

When I woke up, I was lying on a velvet sofa in a luxurious, dimly lit study.

The air smelled of expensive cigars and old leather.

I bolted upright, ignoring the spinning dizziness in my head.

Brucie was nowhere to be seen.

"Looking for this?" a voice called out from the shadows.

A tall figure stepped into the light, holding my daughter expertly in his arms.

It was Luke, dressed in an immaculate tailored suit.

He looked older, harder, and infinitely more dangerous than the man I remembered.

"Give her to me," I demanded, stumbling forward.

He held up a hand, stopping me in my tracks.

"She is perfectly safe, Clover," he said softly.

"But you need to understand the situation you are in."

The heavy oak doors of the study swung open.

An elegant older woman with silver hair glided into the room.

She wore a silk robe and carried herself with terrifying authority.

She looked at me, and my heart stopped dead in my chest.

Her left eye was a piercing ocean blue, and her right eye was almost black.

She had the exact same eyes as my daughter.

"Welcome home, Victoria," the woman said to me.
