Chapter 4 - The Shattered Truth

I slammed on the brakes, sending the truck skidding to a halt on the deserted highway.

"What did you just say?" I breathed into the phone.

"Bruno is not your grandfather," Luke urged, his voice frantic.

"He's an ex-syndicate enforcer who stole you when you were a child."

I looked over at the unconscious man bleeding out in the passenger seat.

The man who had taught me how to ride a bike and wiped away my tears.

"You're lying," I snarled at the man who had abandoned me.

"Check the glove box," Luke pleaded.

"Look underneath the registration papers."

I kept the phone pressed to my ear as I popped the compartment open.

Beneath a stack of old napkins, I found a folded piece of yellowed paper.

I opened it under the dim dome light of the truck.

It was a missing child poster from two decades ago.

The little girl in the picture was undeniably me.

The name on the poster was Victoria Sterling.

"You are my cousin, Clover," Luke's voice echoed through the speaker.

"Which means our daughter is a pureblood heir."

I dropped the phone, feeling the contents of my stomach rise to my throat.

Everything I knew about my entire life was a fabricated lie.

Before I could even scream, the truck was suddenly illuminated by blinding high beams.

Two massive armored vehicles had boxed me in from the front and rear.

Men with assault rifles surrounded the truck in seconds.

The driver's side door was brutally violently ripped open.
