Chapter 3 - The Treacherous Ascent

The blaring sound of the security alarm echoed through the underground maintenance tunnels.
Red emergency lights began to flash, bathing the concrete walls in a sinister glow.
"They are locking down the entire grid," Marcus said, rapidly typing on a wall-mounted security panel.
"I can manually override the service elevator, but it will only take us as high as the twentieth floor."
Charlotte wiped the dried blood from her chin, her eyes burning with newfound resolve.
"Do it, we will figure out the rest when we get there," she ordered.
Marcus bypassed the security firewall and forced the elevator doors to slide open.
They stepped inside, and Marcus slammed his fist against the override button.
The metal box jerked violently before beginning its rapid ascent toward the upper levels.
Charlotte watched the floor numbers tick upward on the digital display.
She thought about Victoria, the cruel woman who had dragged her across the marble floor.
She thought about her uncle Richard, the man who had ordered her mother's execution.
She promised herself that tonight, she would strip them of everything they loved.
The elevator shuddered and came to a harsh, grinding halt on the twentieth floor.
The heavy doors slid open, revealing a luxurious hallway lined with expensive art and thick velvet carpets.
Charlotte stepped out cautiously, checking the corners for any of Richard's armed men.
The hallway appeared completely empty, but an eerie silence hung in the air.
"The stairs to the penthouse are at the end of the east wing," Marcus whispered, pointing down the hall.
They moved quickly and silently, blending into the dark shadows of the opulent corridor.
Just as they reached the heavy oak doors of the stairwell, a figure stepped out from a nearby suite.
Charlotte froze instantly, her blood turning completely cold in her veins.
It was Julian, her former fiancé, dressed perfectly in a custom black tuxedo.
Julian was the man who had supposedly died in a tragic boating accident two years ago.
Charlotte stared at him, unable to comprehend how the love of her life was standing right in front of her.
Julian looked at her bruised face and dirty clothes, a slow, mocking smile spreading across his handsome face.
"Hello, Charlotte, you look absolutely terrible," Julian said, his voice dripping with pure arrogance.
"You were dead," Charlotte whispered, the betrayal hitting her harder than Victoria's physical blows.
"I was expensive, darling," Julian corrected her, casually adjusting his expensive silk tie.
"Richard paid me a fortune to disappear so you would be emotionally completely broken."
Charlotte felt a tear of pure rage slide down her bruised cheek.
Julian reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a small, silver panic button.
"Now, be a good girl and surrender, or I press this button and thirty armed men will rush this hallway."
Before Charlotte could react, Marcus lunged forward with terrifying speed.
He slammed Julian against the wall, knocking the panic button from his hand.
But as the silver device hit the thick velvet carpet, a loud, piercing electronic screech filled the air.

Julian smiled weakly through his bloody teeth as he looked up at Charlotte.
"Too late, my love, the penthouse is now permanently sealed."
