Chapter 2 - The Dark Basement

The heavy hands of the private security guards clamped down on Charlotte’s bruised shoulders.

They dragged her roughly away from the glittering lights of the grand lobby.

The wealthy guests immediately returned to their champagne, completely forgetting the brutal scene.

Charlotte did not fight back as the guards shoved her into a service elevator.

She kept her face hidden beneath her tangled hair, carefully assessing her surroundings.

The elevator descended rapidly into the cold, concrete depths of the hotel's underground levels.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her mind remained razor-sharp.

She knew exactly what happened to people who were taken to the Solmere basement.

They were quietly disposed of, erased from existence to protect the company's flawless reputation.

The elevator doors chimed and slid open to reveal a damp, poorly lit maintenance corridor.

The lead guard, a massive man with a scarred jaw, pushed her forcefully against the concrete wall.

"You picked the wrong hotel to rob, little girl," the second guard sneered.

He pulled a heavy, suppressed pistol from the holster beneath his dark jacket.

Charlotte tightened her fists, preparing to fight for her life using the self-defense her mother had taught her.

The man with the scarred jaw stepped closely in front of her, blocking her from the other guard's view.

He reached into his own coat, his face completely devoid of emotion.

Charlotte braced herself for the fatal impact.

Instead, the scarred man turned around with lightning speed and struck his partner in the throat.

The second guard dropped his weapon and collapsed to the floor, gasping for air before passing out entirely.

Charlotte stared in absolute shock as the scarred man picked up the dropped gun.

He turned back to her and immediately dropped to one knee, bowing his head in deep respect.

"It is an honor to finally meet you, Miss Vale," the massive man whispered.

"My name is Marcus, and your mother paid me to keep you alive when this day finally came."

Charlotte let out a breath she did not realize she had been holding.

"My mother knew they were going to betray her?" Charlotte asked, her voice shaking slightly.

Marcus stood up and handed her a sleek, black keycard with a golden crest.

"She knew everything, and she left the master deed to the company hidden in the penthouse."

Marcus pointed toward a heavy metal door at the end of the dark corridor.

"If Richard officially signs the merger papers tonight, the foreign syndicate will dissolve the company forever."

Charlotte gripped the keycard, feeling a new wave of fierce determination wash over her.

"Then we need to get to the penthouse before the press conference begins," she declared.

Marcus nodded, but his radio suddenly crackled with a frantic voice.

"Lock down all elevators immediately, the boss wants the girl brought back up to his private office."

Charlotte and Marcus exchanged a look of pure panic.

Richard had somehow realized exactly who she was.
