Chapter 8 - The Price of a Devoted Heart

Logan drove through the pouring rain at breakneck speed, the windshield wipers struggling against the deluge.

His knuckles were bone-white against the steering wheel.

He arrived at Middlesex Memorial Hospital in forty minutes, his scrubs soaked from the rain.

He sprinted through the emergency entrance, flashing his chief badge to the security guards.

A weary doctor met him outside the intensive care cubicle.

"Dr. Thorne, we stabilized her, but it’s severe aortic valve stenosis compounded by acute heart failure."

"Her valve is severely calcified and barely moving."

"We don't have the specialized structural heart team here to perform an emergency valve replacement on a patient of her age."

Logan stepped into the room, his breath catching in his throat.

Margaret looked so small beneath the heavy white hospital sheets.

Her breathing was shallow and labored, an oxygen mask fogging with every weak exhalation.

Logan dropped to his knees beside the bed, grabbing her cold, frail hand.

"Mom," he whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in his adult life.

"I'm here."

Margaret’s eyelids fluttered open, her tired hazel eyes searching the room until they found his face.

A faint, loving smile touched the corners of her dry lips.

"My boy..." she breathed through the plastic mask.

"I tried to make the stew for Sunday... but my chest felt so tight..."

"Don't talk, Mom. Just rest," Logan pleaded, pressing her hand against his cheek, directly over his birthmark.

"I'm going to fix this. I'm going to transfer you to New York right now."

The local cardiologist stepped into the room, shaking his head with grim honesty.

"Logan, she won't survive a two-hour transfer in an ambulance with this pulmonary edema."

"Her only chance is an immediate transcatheter valve replacement right here, right now."

"The problem is, the only specialized aortic valve delivery system capable of navigating her tortuous anatomy is the proprietary Sterling-Aero valve."

"The regional supply depot ran out this morning, and the manufacturer requires executive authorization to deploy the emergency reserve via medical helicopter."

Logan’s world spun.

The one piece of medical technology that could save the woman who gave him a life was owned entirely by the man he had cast away hours ago.
