Chapter 6 - The Phantom Returns

Celeste Sterling looked fragile, wrapped in a pale designer trench coat that seemed far too large for her.
Her hair was perfectly styled, yet terror had stripped every ounce of aristocratic composure from her features.
When the lounge door opened, both parents sprang to their feet like wounded animals.
"Is he... is he alive?" Celeste gasped, her voice cracking as fresh tears spilled over her cheeks.
Logan paused just inside the doorway, letting the silence hang heavily in the air.
He watched her face intently.
He waited for any spark of remembrance, any echo of Room 412 from three decades past.
"The surgery was successful," Logan announced in a measured, professional cadence.
"We resected the malformation and contained the hemorrhage."
"Julian is stable, and barring unforeseen complications, he will make a full neurological recovery."
Celeste dropped back onto the couch, sobbing uncontrollably into her trembling hands.
Graham embraced his wife, burying his face into her shoulder as heavy tears soaked her collar.
"Thank God," Graham choked out.
"Thank God for you, Dr. Thorne."
Graham broke the embrace and walked straight toward Logan, reaching out with both hands.
"You saved our family," Graham stammered, his eyes red and swollen.
"We will give you whatever you want."
"A new hospital wing, an unrestricted grant, anything."
"Name your price, Doctor."
Logan did not move.
He stood perfectly still, letting Graham's desperate gratitude wash over him like dirty water.
Celeste slowly rose from the couch and approached Logan, dabbing her eyes with the handkerchief.
"Please let us repay you," she whispered, looking directly into his face for the very first time.
"No mother could ever bear to lose her only son."
Her eyes lingered on the left side of his face.
The crimson birthmark stood out vividly against Logan’s pale scrub top.
Logan saw the exact second the air vanished from Celeste’s lungs.
Her pupils contracted into tiny black pinpricks.
Her hand froze in mid-air, the silk handkerchief slipping from her fingers and drifting to the floor.
Her lower lip began to tremble violently.
"Celeste? What is it, darling?" Graham asked, turning toward her in confusion.
Celeste took a stumbling step backward, her gaze locked on the crimson pattern stretching across Logan's cheek.
The color drained from her skin until she looked as lifeless as marble.
"It can't be..." she whispered, her voice barely a breathless wheeze.
"St. Jude... thirty years ago..."
May you like
Logan offered a cold, devastating smile that never reached his eyes.
"You told the nurse to take me out of the room, Mrs. Sterling."
