Chapter 7 - The Room of Shattered Lies

The waiting room felt as cold as a morgue.
Graham looked frantically between his trembling wife and the tall, unyielding surgeon standing before them.
"Celeste, what are you talking about?" Graham demanded, his voice thick with rising panic.
"What does St. Jude have to do with Dr. Thorne?"
Celeste could not speak.
She covered her mouth with both hands, dry sobs racking her chest as she shook her head in sheer denial.
Logan turned his eyes onto Graham, peeling away years of polite distance.
"Your wife remembers, Mr. Sterling," Logan said softly, every syllable landing like an iron hammer.
"Room 412."
"A healthy baby boy with black curls and a crimson mark across his face."
"A baby you both abandoned within six hours of birth because he wasn't aesthetically suitable for your social circle."
Graham took a sharp step back, his foot catching on the leg of a chair.
"No... that boy was placed into closed state wardship," Graham stammered, his polished arrogance rotting from within.
"Our private attorney told us the child died of respiratory failure three months later in an orphanage!"
Logan let out a low, bitter laugh.
"Your attorney lied to ease your conscience and keep billing your family office, Graham."
"Nurse Margaret Vance took me home."
"She worked double shifts, sold her mother's heirlooms, and raised me on a nurse's salary."
"She gave me her love, while you gave me away to avoid awkward questions at your country club."
Celeste fell to her knees on the waiting room carpet, reaching desperately toward the hem of Logan’s lab coat.
"Logan..." she cried, her voice cracking into high, desperate wails.
"Forgive me... please, my baby... I was young, I was terrified of what people would say..."
Logan stepped backward, letting her hands grasp empty air.
"Do not call me your baby, Mrs. Sterling."
"You lost the right to speak my name thirty years ago when you walked out through the hospital's private garage."
Graham looked down at his sobbing wife, then back up at the brilliant surgeon who had just pulled his other son back from death.
The crushing realization of what they had thrown away hit Graham with the force of an avalanche.
This world-renowned pioneer, the man celebrated by world leaders and kings of industry, was the blood he discarded like trash.
"What do you want from us, Logan?" Graham pleaded, his voice breaking completely.
"Do you want to expose us to the press? Do you want our fortune?"
"Tell us what will make this right!"
Logan looked at the broken billionaire with absolute pity.
"Nothing you own can buy back thirty years, Mr. Sterling."
"I saved Julian because I am a physician, and he did not choose his parents."
"Tomorrow morning, I will check his recovery ward."
"And after that, I never want to see your faces again."
Logan turned on his heel and walked out, leaving the couple weeping on the floor of the private lounge.
He walked down the long corridor, expecting to feel an overwhelming sense of triumph.
Instead, a strange, hollow ache pressed against his chest.
As he reached his office, his personal phone rang, flashing an emergency alert from Branford.

It was the local hospital near the shore.
Margaret had collapsed in her kitchen, and the ambulance was currently rushing her to the cardiac center.
