Chapter 10 - The Last Message

The massive aircraft continued its incredibly violent, screeching slide down the foamy concrete runway.
The friction was unbelievably intense, rapidly filling the cockpit with the acrid, toxic smell of burning metal and melting plastic.
Laura slammed her boots aggressively onto the rudder pedals, desperately trying to keep the heavy nose perfectly straight.
The bright red warning lights at the very edge of the runway grew larger and closer by the absolute millisecond.
Just as the nose of the plane reached the very last strip of pavement, the aircraft finally ground to a violent, shuddering halt.
The sudden, heavy silence in the cockpit was far more deafening than the tearing metal had ever been.
Laura sat completely frozen in her seat for a long moment, her breath coming in ragged, incredibly exhausted gasps.
We actually stopped, the First Officer whispered, warm tears of pure joy streaming down his pale face.
Evacuate the aircraft immediately, Laura ordered, aggressively hitting the emergency slide deployment button.
She threw off her heavy headset and practically kicked the severely damaged cockpit door entirely open.
The passenger cabin was thickly filled with smoke, but the emergency exits were fully open and the inflatable slides were properly deployed.
People were cheering and crying loudly as they slid down to the absolute safety of the tarmac.
Laura pushed frantically through the thick smoke until she successfully reached the rear galley section.
Leo was standing there completely unharmed, firmly holding the hand of the elderly veteran who had bravely saved their lives.
Mommy! Leo cried, running forward quickly and burying his small face deep in her waist.
Laura fell heavily to her knees and hugged him tighter than she ever had in her entire life.
We are completely safe now, my beautiful, brave boy, she sobbed quietly into his dark hair.
They walked out onto the yellow emergency slide together, safely sliding down into the cold, refreshing night air of Madrid.
Dozens of flashing fire trucks and bright ambulances securely surrounded the smoking, battered airliner.
Paramedics rushed forward quickly to wrap them in warm, reflective thermal blankets and actively check them for hidden injuries.
The local police had already heavily boarded the plane to secure the body of General Vance and the treacherous detonator.
Laura sat peacefully on the back bumper of an ambulance, watching the chaotic rescue scene with a profound sense of absolute peace.
She had successfully faced her darkest demons, saved her wonderful son, and fully protected three hundred innocent lives.
A Spanish federal investigator respectfully approached her, carefully holding a small plastic evidence bag.
Captain Vance, we miraculously found this sealed envelope tucked securely inside the General's interior jacket pocket, the investigator said.
He handed her the bag, quietly explaining that her name was written clearly on the outside of the envelope.
Laura frowned in deep confusion, actively tearing open the plastic bag and breaking the wax seal on the thick paper.
She slowly unfolded the letter, fully expecting a final, malicious confession from her dead father-in-law.
Instead, she instantly recognized the messy, unmistakable handwriting of her supposedly dead husband.
The note read: "Laura, if you are reading this, my father's plan has failed and my cover is entirely blown."

"I survived the crash five years ago, but the powerful people who built that software are coming for me tonight."
"Do not trust anyone in Madrid; they already know exactly where you are and they are heavily armed."
