Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

Laura looked down at the small boy sleeping peacefully in seat 8B.

Her seven-year-old son, Leo, was clutching his favorite stuffed bear tightly against his chest.

She gently pulled the thin blue airline blanket over his small, resting shoulders.

I will be right back, she whispered softly to him.

The flight attendant urged her forward with a visibly trembling hand.

They moved quickly through the heavy privacy curtains separating the economy class from first class.

The normal, steady hum of the jet engines suddenly sounded entirely wrong to Laura's highly trained ears.

There was a high-pitched, mechanical whine violently vibrating through the floorboards of the aisle.

It was the terrifying sound of massive turbines being pushed dangerously past their commercial cruising limits.

The flight attendant punched a secure, emergency code into the digital keypad outside the cockpit door.

The heavy, reinforced metal barrier clicked loudly and swung open into the dark cabin.

Laura stepped inside quickly, and the heavy door immediately locked shut behind her.

The cockpit was a chaotic, blinding sea of flashing red warning lights and blaring auditory alarms.

The First Officer was frantically pulling back on the main control yoke with both of his hands.

His face was completely pale and covered in a thick, shiny layer of cold sweat.

The Captain was slumped over completely motionless in his left seat, clutching his chest and gasping for air.

He is having a massive heart attack, the First Officer screamed over the deafening alarms.

I cannot possibly fly this massive machine alone while actively fighting the main computer system.

Laura immediately leaned over the center console to read the primary digital flight displays.

The artificial horizon meter was tilted at a terrifying, unnatural downward angle.

The commercial airliner was completely locked into a steep, accelerating dive directly toward the dark Atlantic Ocean.

Pull the nose up right now, Laura ordered automatically, her military training instantly taking over.

I am trying with everything I have, the First Officer yelled back in pure, unadulterated panic.

The automatic pilot system is completely unresponsive to any of my manual physical overrides.

Laura grabbed the incapacitated captain's empty yoke and pulled backward with all her strength.

The metal control column refused to budge even a single, solitary inch.

It felt exactly as if the steering mechanism were locked entirely in solid, immovable concrete.

She rapidly scanned the digital flight management computer screen mounted on the center console.

A horrifying chill ran down her spine that had absolutely nothing to do with the freezing altitude outside.

The screen was aggressively displaying a string of encrypted green code overriding the civilian aviation software.

Laura recognized that specific, highly advanced military-grade encryption signature instantly.

It was the exact same classified software protocol that had caused her husband's fatal jet crash five years ago.

Someone had deliberately sabotaged this civilian flight using a ghost program the military firmly claimed was destroyed.

Suddenly, the main analog radio crackled to life with a loud, aggressive burst of static.

A digitized, highly robotic voice filled the small, echoing space of the cockpit.

Welcome back to the sky, Viper, the voice said, using Laura's old, highly classified military callsign.
