Chapter 9 - The Dead Man's Switch

Mara stared at the television screen in absolute horror.
The Senator had not just framed Dante for Preston’s murder; he had weaponized the entire federal government against him.
"Preston is dead?" Mara whispered, her hands trembling as she looked at Dante.
Dante’s expression hardened into a mask of pure, lethal calculation, ignoring the pain in his chest.
"Thorne is tying up loose ends," Dante rasped, trying to sit up against the pillows.
"Preston knew too much about Bianca's involvement in the poisoning, so they killed him and pinned it on the easiest target."
The doctor rushed into the room, holding a secure tablet with a grim look on his face.
"Boss, the FBI just raided three of our legitimate businesses, and Silas has officially taken over the northern territories," the doctor reported.
"We have exactly two hours before they trace the blood trail in the alley and find this clinic."
Dante ripped the IV lines out of his arm, wincing in agony as fresh blood spotted his bandages.
"Dante, stop, you will kill yourself!" Mara screamed, trying to push him back down onto the bed.
"If I stay in this bed, we both die, Mara," he stated fiercely, swinging his legs over the edge.
He ordered the doctor to bring him a clean shirt, a heavy dose of painkillers, and his secure laptop.
Within ten minutes, Dante was dressed in black, leaning heavily against the surgical table as his fingers flew across the keyboard.
"Before Silas betrayed me, I designed a dead man's switch," Dante explained, his eyes fixed on the glowing screen.
"It is a digital vault containing every bribe, murder, and illegal transaction Senator Thorne has committed over the last thirty years."
Mara watched in awe as this wounded, bleeding man orchestrated the downfall of an empire.
"I am broadcasting it to every major news network, the Department of Justice, and the dark web simultaneously," Dante declared.
He pressed the final keystroke, initiating the massive data transfer.
They stood in tense silence, watching the news broadcast on the wall television.
Five minutes later, the news anchor abruptly stopped reading his teleprompter.
His face turned pale as he listened to his earpiece, and then he looked directly into the camera.
"We are receiving breaking, unprecedented news," the anchor stammered.
"Massive federal arrest warrants have just been issued for Senator Thorne and his daughter, Bianca Thorne, following a catastrophic leak of highly classified criminal evidence."
The screen cut to live helicopter footage of heavily armed FBI agents storming the Thorne political headquarters.
Senator Thorne was shown being dragged out of the building in silver handcuffs, looking absolutely terrified.
Mara let out a sob of pure, unadulterated relief, burying her face in her hands.
It was over.
The Senator was destroyed, Bianca was going to prison, and Dante’s name would eventually be cleared.

Dante pulled her into a fierce, triumphant embrace, resting his chin on the top of her head.
"We won, Mara," Dante whispered, kissing her hair. "We are finally free."
