Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage

The ride to Dante’s private compound in the hills of New York was cloaked in heavy, suffocating silence.
Mara watched the rain beat against the bulletproof glass, her wet apron sticking uncomfortably to her shivering skin.
Dante poured a glass of amber liquid from the car's minibar and handed it to her, his expression unreadable.
"Drink it, it will stop your teeth from chattering," he commanded softly.
She took a small sip, letting the warmth spread through her chest as the massive iron gates of his estate loomed into view.
The compound looked more like a modern military fortress than a billionaire's mansion, surrounded by armed guards holding automatic rifles.
Dante carried her inside past a dozen bowing servants and brought her directly to a massive, opulent master bedroom.
"My personal physician is on his way to examine you and the baby," Dante said, tossing his damp coat onto a velvet chair.
"I am fine, Dante, it was just a slap," Mara argued, feeling incredibly out of place in her muddy uniform.
Dante crossed the room in two long strides, invading her personal space until she could smell his expensive cologne and gunpowder.
"You are carrying a Russo heir, Mara, which means your safety is no longer up for debate," he growled, his thumb tracing her bruised cheek.
A sharp knock at the door interrupted them, and an older man carrying a black medical bag hurried into the room.
Dr. Silva was efficient and quiet, drawing Mara’s blood and checking her vitals while Dante paced the floor like a caged lion.
After running the blood sample through a portable centrifuge, the doctor’s face turned completely pale.
"Mr. Russo, the baby is perfectly healthy and developing normally," Dr. Silva announced cautiously.
Dante stopped pacing, a rare look of profound relief washing over his hardened features.
"However," the doctor continued, his voice shaking slightly, "I found alarming trace levels of thallium in Miss Whitfield's bloodstream."
Mara gasped, her hands instinctively flying to cover her stomach in sheer panic.
"Thallium?" Dante repeated, the temperature in the room seeming to drop below freezing.
"Yes, sir," Dr. Silva confirmed. "It is a slow-acting poison, tasteless and odorless."
Someone at the Thorne estate had been methodically and secretly poisoning Mara's food for weeks.
Bianca had not just been a cruel employer; she had actively been trying to murder Mara before the pregnancy was even discovered.

Dante pulled a heavy silver handgun from his shoulder holster and racked the slide with a terrifying mechanical click.
"Lock down the entire compound," Dante ordered his men through his earpiece. "Nobody comes in or out until I return with Preston Thorne's head."
