Chapter 6 - The Siege of Pier 44

The shockwave from the explosion threw Mara violently to the concrete floor.
Thick smoke and dust filled the cavernous warehouse, instantly blinding everyone inside.
The deafening roar of automatic gunfire erupted from the shattered entrance, tearing through the darkness.
"Kill her!" Senator Thorne screamed, coughing wildly as he dragged Bianca behind a rusted shipping container.
Mara scrambled desperately across the debris-littered floor, covering her stomach to protect her baby.
Through the thick haze of smoke, the terrifying silhouette of Dante Russo emerged like a god of war.
He was holding a heavy tactical rifle, mowing down the Senator’s hired mercenaries with ruthless, surgical precision.
Dante’s eyes scanned the chaos until they locked onto Mara huddled behind a wooden crate.
He dropped his rifle, sprinting across the dangerous kill zone and sliding to his knees beside her.
"I told you not to leave the compound," Dante roared, though his voice was entirely stripped of anger, filled only with desperate relief.
He pulled her tightly against his chest, shielding her fragile body with his Kevlar-plated back.
Bullets sparked and ricocheted off the concrete around them, kicking up clouds of white dust.
"They lied to me, Dante," Mara wept into his shoulder. "Lily isn't here, they just wanted to kill me to protect his political campaign."
Dante’s jaw clenched so hard it looked like it might shatter.
"I know," Dante whispered, pressing a hard kiss to the crown of her head. "I hacked his private servers an hour ago and found your real birth certificate."
Dante pulled a sleek, deadly sidearm from his thigh holster and stood up, pulling Mara behind him.
"Stay exactly behind me, and do not let go of my belt," he commanded, stepping out from behind the wooden crate.
Dante moved with terrifying efficiency, firing single, lethal shots that dropped the remaining mercenaries one by one.
He cornered Senator Thorne and Bianca near the back loading dock of the warehouse.
The Senator was holding his hands up in the air, his face pale and slick with terrified sweat.
"Russo, listen to me, we can make a deal!" the Senator begged, backing away until he hit the cold brick wall.
"I will give you exclusive government contracts, I will clear your criminal records, just name your price!"
Dante raised his weapon, aiming directly at the center of the corrupt politician's forehead.
"You tried to murder my child," Dante stated, his voice as cold and merciless as a winter grave.
"There is not enough money in the world to buy your life."
Dante placed his finger on the trigger, fully prepared to execute the Senator in cold blood.
Suddenly, a deafening gunshot rang out from directly behind Dante and Mara.
May you like
But the bullet did not hit the Senator.
Dante let out a sharp, choked gasp as a high-caliber round tore through the back of his shoulder, spraying bright red blood across Mara's face.
