The snow was falling softly over Chicago, exactly two years to the day since Clara had jumped in front of that delivery van.
The diner was closed to the public for a private event. The booths had been pushed aside, replaced by rows of white folding chairs. String lights hung from the exposed brick ceiling, casting a warm, golden glow over the room.
At the end of the aisle stood Julian, looking at her with a love so profound it stole the breath from her lungs. Leo was the best man, holding the rings on a velvet pillow. Baby Hope was the flower girl, toddling down the aisle in a white dress, dropping rose petals on the restored hardwood floor.
Clara walked down the aisle, her heart full, looking at the faces in the crowd. There were corporate executives sitting next to formerly homeless cooks, wealthy investors sharing a table with waitresses who had just bought their first homes. It was a room entirely built on second chances.

As Clara reached the altar and took Julian’s hands, she looked past his shoulder, through the frosty glass of the front window. The neon sign buzzed warmly against the winter night.
She had started with fifteen cents in a broken register. Now, she had a husband, a son, a daughter, and an empire of hope. Julian leaned in, kissing his bride, and the roar of cheers inside the diner was loud enough to drown out the entire city.
