Chapter 1 - THE LOOPHOLE

Julian Vance stood on the sidewalk, the biting Chicago wind forgotten as he stared at the bustling, brightly lit diner. Clara’s Hearth wasn’t just surviving; it was a phenomenon. He pushed through the glass doors, the bell chiming over the roar of laughter and clinking silverware. The scent of roasted garlic, fresh herbs, and warm bread wrapped around him like a blanket.
Clara stood behind the counter, heavily pregnant but glowing. When she saw him, her face broke into a radiant smile. She wiped her hands on her apron and waddled around the counter. "Julian. You came back."
"I can't believe what you've done with this place, Clara," Julian breathed, looking at the restored mahogany booths and the spotless open kitchen. "You didn't just save it. You built an empire."
But their reunion was cut short by the sharp, echoing click of designer heels.
The diner fell silent as Victoria, Julian’s ruthless ex-wife, stepped through the doors. Wrapped in a thousand-dollar mink coat, her eyes swept the room with absolute disdain. Victoria had spent the last three years trying to strip Julian of his wealth and take full custody of Leo, not out of love, but out of spite.
"Well, well," Victoria sneered, looking Clara up and down. "So this is the little charity case who jumped in front of a van. And this is the dump Julian gave you."
Julian stepped between them, his jaw clenched. "Get out, Victoria. You have no business here."
Victoria smiled, a cold, predatory stretching of her lips. She reached into her Prada handbag and pulled out a thick manila envelope, dropping it onto a nearby table. "Actually, darling, I have every business here. You see, Julian, when you transferred the deed of the building to Clara, you forgot one tiny, crucial detail. You owned the building, yes. But your holding company didn't own the land underneath it. It was leased."
May you like
Julian’s blood ran cold.
"I bought the land yesterday," Victoria announced, her voice echoing in the quiet diner. "And I'm terminating the lease. You have thirty days to vacate my property, Clara. After that, the bulldozers are coming."
