Chapter 9 - The Last Stand

Natalie pushed Marcus’s heavy, bleeding body off of her and scrambled backward on the cold concrete.

She looked toward the warehouse entrance, expecting to see Raymond standing there with a smoking gun.

Instead, a completely unknown tactical unit dressed in unmarked black gear poured into the massive building.

They were not police officers, and they certainly were not working for her corrupt father.

They were federal agents, heavily armed and operating on the intelligence Raymond had secretly transmitted from the woods.

The federal strike team immediately engaged the remaining mercenaries in a fierce, deafening firefight.

Her father panicked, scrambling desperately toward the open door of his luxury limousine to escape the chaos.

Raymond emerged from the shadows like a ghost, violently tackling the older man against the hood of the car.

He slammed the corrupt patriarch down onto the metal, securing heavy steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.

Natalie pulled Chloe up from the floor, shielding her sister with her own body as they ran toward the safety of the federal barricade.

The remaining syndicate mercenaries, realizing they were completely outgunned, finally threw their weapons to the ground and surrendered.

The deafening noise of the warehouse was abruptly replaced by the harsh, commanding shouts of the federal agents securing the scene.

Raymond walked slowly over to Natalie, wiping a mixture of sweat and blood from his exhausted, battered face.

He looked into her eyes, checking to make absolutely sure that the woman he had fought so hard to protect was safe.

Natalie threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his tactical vest as tears of absolute relief flooded her eyes.

Raymond held her tightly, resting his chin on the top of her head, completely ignoring the absolute chaos surrounding them.

Paramedics rushed into the warehouse, throwing warm thermal blankets over Natalie and her traumatized sister.

They led the two women toward a waiting ambulance, finally removing them from the terrifying nightmare that had consumed their day.

Natalie sat on the back bumper of the ambulance, watching her father being violently shoved into the back of a federal transport van.

She realized that the toxic, corrupt family legacy that had haunted her entire life was finally, permanently broken.

She looked over at Raymond, who was giving his final debriefing to the commanding federal officer in the rain.

He caught her gaze across the flashing red and blue lights, offering her a genuine, incredibly warm smile.

For the first time since the cake fell, Natalie actually felt like she had a real future ahead of her.

Suddenly, a young federal agent approached Natalie with a deeply confused expression on his face.

He handed her the cracked burner phone, stating that it had just received a very strange text message.
