Chapter 3 - The Confession

I returned to the hospital to find Julian awake. He was sitting up, looking exhausted but clearer than the night before.
I sat in the chair next to his bed. For a long time, neither of us spoke. Fifteen years of silence is a heavy wall to tear down.
"Leo told me about the letters," I finally said, my voice thick with emotion. "Julian, I never got them. Robert intercepted my mail. He lied to me. He told me you said you never wanted to see me again."
Julian stared at his hands. "I wrote to you when Maggie died. My wife. Leo was only two. I was drowning in medical debt from her cancer treatments. I begged you for help. Robert came to my apartment a week later. He threw my letter on the floor and told me you said I was dead to you."
Tears spilled over my cheeks. I reached out and grabbed his hand. He didn't pull away.
"I would have moved heaven and earth to save her, Julian. I would have given everything I own to help you. I have spent the last decade searching for you."
Julian looked at me, his eyes red. "I changed my name. I worked cash jobs. I didn't want Sterling money if it meant being hated by my own father."

"You are my entire world," I choked out, pulling my grown son into a desperate embrace. For the first time in fifteen years, Julian hugged me back, burying his face in my shoulder as years of grief and resentment finally washed away.
We were a family again. But the war wasn't over.
