Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Ledger

The pages of the thick file laid bare a web of corruption that went deeper than Natalie had ever imagined.

The local credit union was not robbed by an outside gang; it was deliberately looted by the mayor and Detective Vance.

They needed a scapegoat to take the fall for the missing five million dollars before federal auditors arrived.

Andrew Miller, an honest, hardworking mechanic with a sick daughter, had accidentally stumbled upon their ledger.

He had tried to report the suspicious transactions to the bank manager, who was also part of the syndicate.

Instead of investigating, they planted the stolen money in Andrew's account and fabricated the embezzlement charges.

"So the loan sharks and the syndicate are all the same people?" Natalie asked, her hands shaking with anger.

Marcus nodded slowly, pouring a fresh cup of coffee and sliding it across the table toward her.

"They crushed his spirit, threatened his little girl, and forced him into a corner," Marcus explained.

"And now they are going to use the media to paint him as a violent fugitive who kidnapped his own child."

Natalie looked down at the files, realizing that time was running out rapidly.

"We have to find him before they execute them both and bury the truth forever," Natalie insisted.

Marcus opened a secure laptop on the desk, typing a series of rapid commands into a satellite tracking program.

"I kept in touch with a few federal cyber-crimes contacts before I retired," Marcus murmured.

"I can ping the burner phone the kidnappers used to call you at the hospital."

The screen flickered, displaying a digital map of the county with a single blinking red dot.

The dot was moving steadily northward, heading directly toward the abandoned industrial mining tunnels near Blackwood Mountain.

"That's where they take people when they want them to vanish without a trace," Marcus said grimly, loading extra shells into his shotgun.

"We ride tonight."

They jumped into Marcus's rugged, four-wheel-drive truck and sped into the heart of the raging mountain storm.

The tires churned through the deep mud as they climbed higher into the dense, foggy pine forests.

As they rounded a sharp curve near the entrance of the old mining tunnels, they spotted a convoy of black SUVs parked off the road.

Natalie and Marcus killed their headlights, creeping their truck silently into the shadows of the trees.

Through the heavy rain, they saw Detective Vance and the scar-faced leader dragging Andrew toward the dark mouth of the mine.

And clinging desperately to Andrew's torn jacket was little Ashley, crying uncontrollably in the freezing rain.
