Chapter 2 - The Hospital Room

The sterile white lights of the pediatric intensive care unit buzzed softly overhead.
Ashley lay in the hospital bed, looking painfully small beneath the heavy white cotton blankets.
Officer Natalie stood quietly beside the bed, holding the worn stuffed puppy named Buddy.
A pediatric nurse adjusted the intravenous drip in Ashley’s arm, offering a sympathetic smile.
Natalie gently placed Buddy into the little girl's thin arms.
"You're safe here, Ashley," Natalie said softly. "The doctors are taking very good care of you."
Ashley clutched the stuffed animal tightly against her chest, her big eyes staring blankly at the wall.
"My daddy always said bruises were just love marks," Ashley whispered, her voice barely audible.
Natalie froze, the blood running cold in her veins as the chilling 911 phrase suddenly made terrifying sense.
"What did you mean by that, sweetheart?" Natalie asked, keeping her tone carefully gentle.
Ashley looked down at her hands, pulling back the sleeves of her hospital gown to reveal faint, fading bruises.
"When daddy tried to get money from the bad men to buy my medicine, they came to the house," Ashley explained.
"They hit him, and he cried, but he told me not to be scared because pain means someone loves you enough to fight."
Natalie felt a wave of absolute fury wash over her, realizing the child had been subjected to unimaginable trauma.
She immediately suspected the loan shark whose threatening note was found in Andrew's wrecked truck.
She pulled out her phone to call the station, but the door to the hospital room suddenly flew open.
A tall man in a sharp grey suit stood in the doorway, flashing a silver badge to the nurse.
He introduced himself as Detective Vance from the county financial crimes division.
Vance looked directly at Ashley, then turned his cold, calculating gaze onto Natalie.
"Officer Natalie, you need to step away from the child right now," Detective Vance ordered coldly.
"Why?" Natalie demanded, standing defensively in front of the bed. "She is a victim here."
Vance walked closer, pulling an arrest warrant from his leather folder and waving it in the air.

"Because her father, Andrew Miller, is not a victim of a car crash," Vance stated firmly.
"He is currently being hunted as the primary suspect in a multi-million-dollar bank embezzlement ring."
