Chapter 1 - The Abandoned Truck

The red and blue emergency lights of Officer Natalie’s cruiser flashed against the dark, slick asphalt of Old Creek Road.
A state tow truck was already winching a heavily battered blue pickup up from the steep ravine below the washed-out guardrail.
The driver’s side door was caved in like crushed tin foil, and the windshield was completely shattered.
Natalie stood at the edge of the broken pavement, holding her flashlight down toward the wreckage.
Her heart pounded heavily as she thought of little Ashley fighting for her life in the pediatric hospital downtown.
She radioed dispatch to confirm the truck’s registration plates, praying it matched Andrew's vehicle.
The dispatcher’s voice crackled back through the static, confirming the truck belonged to Andrew Miller.
Natalie approached the vehicle, stepping carefully through the scattered shards of glass and twisted metal.
The interior was caked in dried mud and splattered with dark, ominous drops of blood on the steering wheel.
Yet, as she shined her light across the passenger seat, something caught her eye.
It was a small, insulated medical bag zipped tightly shut, resting next to a muddy envelope.
Natalie used a gloved hand to unzip the medical bag, revealing a fresh vial of pediatric insulin and emergency supplies.
Andrew had not abandoned his sick daughter to run away from his responsibilities.
He had been on his way back home with her life-saving medicine when the storm caused him to crash.
Then Natalie picked up the wet envelope resting beneath the medical bag and pulled out a single sheet of paper.
It was a bank foreclosure notice dated two days prior, demanding an immediate payment of five thousand dollars.
Written across the bottom in angry red ink was a handwritten threat from a local loan shark.
Before Natalie could process the warning, her police radio blared with an urgent alert from the hospital.

Ashley had just regained consciousness, but her first words were not asking for her father.
She looked at the doctor and whispered that her daddy told her the beatings were just an expression of love.
