Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Carpet

The Grand Horizon Hotel was known worldwide for its quiet luxury and absolute privacy.

For Patricia, a quiet woman who had worked as a maid there for five years, it was simply a place of endless, exhausting work.

Clad in her simple forest green uniform, she pushed her heavy cleaning cart down the thickly carpeted hallway of the fourth floor.

She was incredibly tired, but she always took immense pride in doing her job perfectly.

As she unlocked the heavy oak door to the grand penthouse suite, she fully expected it to be empty.

Instead, she stepped directly into a waking nightmare.

The lavish suite was bathed in warm, elegant pendant lighting, but the atmosphere inside was freezing with absolute terror.

Before Patricia could even call out to announce her presence, she heard a sharp gasp, followed by a desperate cry.

Standing in the center of the plush living room was Thomas, a prominent local businessman dressed in a sharp black suit.

He was red-faced with uncontrollable rage, his fingers violently twisted into the sandy-blonde hair of his terrified wife, Melissa.

Melissa, wearing only a light grey bathrobe, was on her knees, crying and desperately begging him to stop.

"Please, Thomas, you're hurting me so much, just let me explain!" Melissa screamed, her hands desperately trying to pry his strong fingers loose.

Thomas only tightened his cruel grip, his voice a low, menacing growl that echoed through the large room.

"You really think you can run away from me after everything I have done?" Thomas demanded furiously.

"You think you can just take my money and disappear into the night like a coward?"

Patricia’s heart hammered violently against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She was just a minimum-wage maid, and interfering with a high-paying VIP guest usually meant instant termination and severe legal trouble.

But as she saw the sheer, unadulterated terror shining in Melissa’s bruised eyes, her fierce maternal instincts completely overrode her fear.

Gripping the sturdy aluminum handle of her heavy industrial mop, she did not hesitate for a single second.

She lunged rapidly forward, swinging the wet, heavy mop with every ounce of strength she possessed.

The thick, soapy strands collided violently with the side of Thomas's arrogant face, the sickening impact echoing loudly through the suite.

Thomas was knocked completely off his expensive leather shoes, crashing flat onto the pristine carpet.

Melissa covered her ears in absolute shock, while Patricia stood defiantly over the dazed billionaire, her mop raised like a lethal weapon.

For a few agonizing seconds, the massive room was dead silent except for the sound of Melissa’s heavy, trembling breathing.

Thomas lay on the floor, clutching his rapidly bruising jaw, his eyes wide with utter disbelief.

He looked up at Patricia, his face twisting from temporary shock into a terrifying mask of pure, murderous fury.

He began to scramble aggressively to his feet, pointing a trembling, menacing finger directly at the brave maid.

"Do you have any idea who I am, you pathetic peasant?" Thomas spat, wiping a thick trace of blood from his split lip.

"You are completely finished in this city, and I will have you thrown in a federal prison by the end of this day!"

But Patricia did not back down or show even a hint of intimidation.

She stepped bravely between Thomas and the trembling Melissa, firmly holding her ground.

"Call the police right now then," Patricia said, her voice remarkably steady despite her racing heart.

"I am entirely sure they would love to see the security footage of this hallway, and I will gladly testify to what I just witnessed."

Hearing the word "police" spoken aloud, Thomas’s aggressive demeanor suddenly and drastically shifted.

A flash of genuine, undeniable panic quickly crossed his dark eyes.

He glanced nervously toward the suite’s open wall safe in the corner of the room, which was stuffed with thick stacks of cash and a series of forged foreign passports.

Melissa, noticing his sudden hesitation, finally found a shred of her own courage.

She stood up shakily, wrapping her bathrobe tightly around herself, and stepped protectively next to Patricia.

"He won't ever call the police, Patricia," Melissa whispered, her voice shaking but absolutely resolute.

"Because if the authorities come, they will easily find out exactly where all that dirty money came from."

"He didn't come here to forcefully drag me back to our home, Patricia."

"He came here tonight to kill me because I found out he has been embezzling millions from his clients, including my own family's massive estate."

Thomas lunged forward again, entirely desperate to violently silence his wife before she could reveal anything else.

But Patricia fiercely raised the heavy aluminum mop once more, completely blocking his path with a fierce glare.

Realizing he was temporarily outnumbered and that his precious time was rapidly running out, Thomas grabbed his expensive coat.

He quickly scooped up a large handful of the fake passports from the safe and fled the suite, cursing loudly as the heavy door slammed violently shut behind him.

Patricia quickly ran to the door and engaged the heavy deadbolt, finally letting out a massive sigh of relief.

She turned to Melissa and immediately picked up the landline phone to call the local authorities.

However, as Patricia pressed the phone to her ear, she realized there was absolutely no dial tone.

Suddenly, the heavy electronic lock on the suite door beeped loudly, and the deadbolt automatically slid open from the outside.
