Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Ally

Deafening gunfire suddenly erupted, but it did not come from Daniel’s men.
Vance fired a sniper rifle from the top of a rusted loading crane high above the pier.
Three of Daniel’s mercenaries dropped to the concrete before they even realized they were under attack.
Absolute chaos consumed the dark shipyard as bullets ricocheted off the metal containers.
Ethan sprinted across the open pier, grabbed Maya's bound hands, and sliced the ropes with a piece of broken glass.
He scooped up the two screaming girls and ran blindly toward a speedboat docked at the edge of the water.
Daniel cursed loudly, firing his handgun wildly into the darkness as they fled.
A stray bullet grazed Ethan’s shoulder, tearing through his expensive coat and drawing blood.
They dove into the small fiberglass boat, and Maya slammed the throttle forward.
The speedboat launched into the freezing harbor, leaving the burning shipyard far behind them.
Ethan slumped against the back seat, gasping for air as the adrenaline began to fade.
He looked over at his daughter to tell her that they were finally safe.

But Maya suddenly coughed up a horrific amount of blood onto the deck of the boat.
Ethan realized in sheer horror that Maya had taken a bullet straight to the chest to shield her daughters from the gunfire.
